Thank Goodness: 2015 Is Dead!

HeroJob It Looks like brains were yanked out this is random and should not be happy awkward shitYeah, this year was really not very good for me. There was a lot of self loathing, depression, and general bad feelings all around, and on top of everything, I really did not beat a lot of video games. A total of 29 game reviews went out this year, due in part to there not being a lot of games in my library that I really wanted to play, or games that I could not play very well with my hardware. I hope to get to more games in 2016 than I did in 2015, but as is customary, here are my top… 4 games I played for the first time in 2015, listed in the order in which I played them. (more…)

Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin Review (Based on 16 Hours)

2015-12-22_00011I gave this game another shot several months later. Please consult the full review I wrote for it.

Despite having a poor initial introduction to the series, I came to love Dark Souls in due time. Its mechanics, atmosphere, world design, and so forth are all what makes it an incredibly memorable and ultimately excellent game. As such, I was quite eager to play Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin, but after spending roughly 16 hours with it, spread across two playthroughs, I felt myself lose the will to continue playing, as the game was simply making me depressed and resent myself as a human being. I played and stopped playing Dark Souls II: Scholars of The First Sins for reasons I will describe in an upcoming post. I also finished the initial draft of The Malice of Abigale Quinlan, which will still release on January 31st, 2015, or perhaps a few days early if editing goes well. The novel will still be the last of this failed series I started up, and I will refrain from writing multipart or interconnected stories for the foreseeable future. Starting with a silly story I’m tentatively calling Nat’s Quest. (more…)

Final Fantasy XIII Review

This was Final Fantasy XIII by Plague of GripesI have been waiting to revisit this game for years now. If only because I built up so much hype and excitement for Final Fantasy XIII before its release, and the fact that I actively enjoyed it back when it first came out. Heck, the fact it was a multiplatform title was what sold me on the console I primarily used for the next five years. As such, I felt I have some unfinished business to attend to with this title, and going back to it after all this time was at least a little disheartening. (more…)

0 PL Computer Technology ConsoleI finished school for the semester, am almost done with the initial draft for my next novel, or rather novella, and I just built a new computer, and have spent the past few hours getting everything up to snuff. It required a lot of editing and modifying to the main software itself, mostly through things like Classic Shell because Microsoft doesn’t deserve the borderline monopoly they have. So look forward to game reviews based on far stronger hardware, and some more graphically demanding games. (more…)

Grim Fandango Remastered Review

2015-11-28_00131Normally I try to include a little personalized intro that helps to explain, in some weird manner, why exactly this review exists other than the game was next in my game library. However, that was exactly the case for Grim Fandango Remastered, a game I checked out on a whim due to its level of reverence and praise, knowing nothing about the game that was not included in the initial trailer I watched about a year ago. 0 DR2 Fuck Yeah alright here we go now get hyped energy to the maxSo, I’m currently replaying Final Fantasy XIII, because I felt I had unfinished business with that game, and I am thoroughly amazed that the creators were able to tolerate their creation. As a writer, there is so much about this game’s story that drives me nuts, and I cannot believe that 65 million was invested into such a lackluster story. That, and the gameplay’s auto battle system simply does not work as it is told to—  I’ll save it for the review proper, for now, The Game Awards and the Playstation Experience both happen, so here is a rundown of some of those things. Student Transfer Version 1.4 Review

2015-11-25_00015

Okay, there is a lot to unpack here. One, Student Transfer is a collaborative visual novel made by the some people over at tfgamessite.com. Two, the game uses assets ripped from ‘adult’ Japanese visual novels, though it censors the naughtier bits. Three, this is simply a review of the first publicly released build, after the implementation of a couple patches. Four, this was made in about three and a half months, which includes pre-production. Also, I’ve been following this game’s production since its inception, and since it was an idea introduced in the Press-Switch thread.

0 School Days That Face of a dead manSo, I mentioned before how I was planning on taking my most recent novel, Verde’s Doohickey, and turning it into a series of ten novels? Yeah, that is not happening, as I have decided to abruptly end the series with part two, The Malicious Abigale Quinlan, which will be releasing in Q1 2016. I have had a lot of trouble with the story, and I became increasingly bitter towards the idea of continuing the series in general. I will describe my original plans in Malicious, and will take some ideas and turn them into new, other, individual stories, free from continuity or massive casts of characters. Though I will recycle characters and names because I love some of them. (more…)

Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth3: V Generation

2015-10-30_00007Despite my dedication and interest in the franchise, I still find the Neptunia Re;Birth trilogy to be a very temperamental collection of JRPGs that are, and I’m not sure the developers even realize this, are… pretty poorly designed. Re;Birth1 was a massive improvement in comparison to the awful original Hyperdimension Neptunia for PS3. Re;Birth2 was a better game in theory, but it had so many repetitive, temperamental, and annoying elements that I quickly dropped it after beating the game. While Re;Birth3 is probably the best of the bunch, but even I couldn’t convince myself to go through the post game content due to a plethora of issues. (more…)

0Some people are excited about Fallout 4 coming out in a manner of days, but I am waiting until 2017 or so to play it, as I would rather enjoy a complete game with mods applied rather than a buggy game at launch. At the moment, one of my most anticipated game was just released this morning, Student Transfer. Student Transfer is a body swapping and transformation focused game that is made by the fans of Press-Switch, an unfinished title I praised in the past for being something of a dream game of mine, and I plan on reviewing come the next release. I would have already started playing it, but there are a few bugs that are being worked out at the moment, and I am only at chapter 6 in Neptunia Re;Birth3. Remember Me Review

2015-10-25_00004

I often try to avoid playing games that bring me frustration, and even if I want to write a review about it, I try to stop my playthrough after I invested two digits of time into the game. However, I only got about seven hours into Remember Me, a ten to twelve hour long game, before I became so frustrated with it that I felt that it would be a waste of my time and energy to continue playing it. Why did I feel this way? I would likely forget within the year, so here’s a review to properly articulate why I disliked this title

A sandbox game with destructible… everything, where you play as a schizophrenic shapeshifting demigod who switches between four core personality types depending on how the player wishes to have them act. What do you do? Absorb people, disguise yourself as them, cause domestic disputes, and war crimes of just about every caliber as you destroy a futuristic city designed after the late 20th century that automatically rebuilds itself whenever you destroy it, and people respawn. It would cost millions to make, and as such will never exist. A body swap centered visual novel, however, that I can probably do by myself if I hire an artist. Or I could just use Eroge sprites like Student Transfer or Press Switch. Both of which I’ll review come their next build. (more…)

Ys Seven Review

ULUS10551_00021Note: I re-reviewed this title in 2020. Please disregard this review.

Before beginning, I feel I should clarify what I mean when I refer to prior Ys games, as I have played Ys Chronicles, Ark of Napishtim, Oath in Felghana, and Origin before delving into the creatively titled Ys Seven. Aside from Ys: Memories In Celestia, which was released after this title. I just want to clarify how I’m going into this game, as it does a few things I feel it makes some… notable changes. Also, I legally own the game via PSN, and played it using an emulator, because the Playstation TV displays PSP games at 480p, which looks terrible on a 1080p monitor. (more…)

Press Switch you are a poopy face doo doo head dumb dumb steamy boily feces shit fuck you suckSo, the Trans-Pacific Publishing trade agreement is a big thing this week, and it may affect all media in Japan, Australia, the United States, Canada, and more. It will increase the already overpowered corporations’ power, is vaguely written, and will exacerbate the problems with copyright laws, laws that have been mangled and mutilated over the past few decades. You could be deemed a criminal for having the audacity to leak information that the public ought to know about, even if it’s something as simple as a game being technically broken upon release. Tampering with software files would be illegal, from removing DRM, to fixing games, and potentially even mods, which would be viewed as hacking. Piracy could be met with the destruction of your hardware and neigh unlimited fines, and this whole thing was written by corporations for it, so why in the fuck would any true human being support that shit? Seriously, the fact this democratic government would so much as consider this sort of putrid pulsating piece of poo for a second is disgusting. (more…)

Ys Origin Review

2015-10-11_00004About two years ago, I gave my thoughts on Ys Origin, a game I thoroughly enjoyed well above all other Ys games, at least the ones I played, meaning the ones on PC. Although, I didn’t technically fully complete the game as I only cleared it with a single character, Yunica, and felt that I should try out the other two and see how the game stacked up, only to then realize that there was a true ending I was not aware of, which leads into Ys I. Plus, I just felt like playing it again. (more…)

0 KLK Everybody's getting scary I don't know about this guys I am freaking out here spooky skelemenI should probably bring up how Tony Hawk Pro Skater 5 is quite the turd of a game from what I can tell. With a Metacritic of 36 on the PS4 and a… 48 on XBO? I thought that the XBO version wouldn’t work for some people because the game is so terribly made and needs a patch bigger than the game itself to, presumably, even run. Bad framerate, textures, physics, and general game feel all make it a title that will likely just be an ash can project made to renew a license that Activision probably only spent a few million making and shat out the door six months too early… Not that I really care about the series though, I just like the soundtracks of the first four games and that’s it. 0 PL Japan Breasts Woman FanserviceI’m not sure how often I’ve brought this up, but I think that Free to Play games were among the worst things to happen to the industry in recent years, and there have been a lot since I got in this industry’s intestines, mostly the large one, where poop is dried out, around 2006. But after reading this little piece by somebody who has been getting neck deep in whale blood as his employers tried to manipulate individuals with mental problems for the sexiest thing in the mortal world, Kentucky granola, also known as USD, I feel I have an opportunity that I shall not waste, if only because I love the line and it is mostly true. But seeing that combined with enough care and autistic fan devotion to add in every possible playable character from Heavy and Bomb to Fang the Sniper makes me jitter in sheer disbelief that this is real. However, even if I weren’t keeping to my word to not buy the game before September 1, 2017, as to make my claim that I wouldn’t buy the game for ‘years’, I don’t think I’d be that interested. Dust: An Elysian Tail Review

headerI originally planned on opening this review with an anecdote about how the “Indie” movement for the game industry has more or less ended and how the novelty and value of being a game made in terrible personally inflicted conditions means very little unless a publisher picks you up and shows you to the world. PornoSo some Japanese company made an Oculus Rift game where you fuck a balloon in a schoolgirl uniform to simulate sex. Yeah. That’s honestly perfectly fine in my book. I’d rather have pronography be very clearly labeled as such while having next to no artistic merit, and simply be shameless in fulfilling the sexual urges of humans. It’s better than any eroge that dares to have any artistic value, as it is being made for masturbatiory purposes. I’d much rather have sex scenes in visual novels that you can censor if you enter a code, so it is clear you are playing it for the story… Yeah, this is a complicated issue I should not be addressing in the opening like this. Higurashi: When They Cry Chapter 1 – Onikakushi Review

2015-08-18_00016Higurashi: When They Cry is a series of visual novels originally released at Comiket in 2002, and since then have received fourteen Sound Novels, a 38 volume manga series, a total of fifty anime episodes and OVAs, 21 light novels, two live action films, and more. Following a particularly poor translation of the eight main titles of this series, MangaGamer decided that while they are porting over quality visual novels and eroge, they could tackle this beast with their workforce. Oh, but they could not secure the assets from the recently released PS3 version for this PC release. But, somebody made a mod so you may install the backgrounds, sprites, and Japanese voiceover in order to help enhance the experience. 0 Watamote The Unwanted Hug of friendhsip via mascot manSo, Comiket 88 was held in Japan this week, the week of Gamescom, and it naturally had a very spiffy showcase of Doujin games, some very meh looking, others on par with content the lower to mid tier Japanese developers put out. However, I will not be able to play most of them because the world is still greatly divided by languages, when this shit should have been figured out years ago. I’m not saying that English should be the default for the world, as English is a pretty poor language in my book, but I feel that everybody in a developed part of the world should be able to speak a global language as a second language, while most media would be produced in that language to maximize the audience size, and slowly weed out old languages. Now, some people say that a wide variety of languages helps encourage differences in the world and allow people to think differently. I say that while there may be some truth there, some things need to be sacrificed in order for the world to progress and become more understanding. I mean, it could actually help global understanding of others quite a bit if you design the language properly and based on the pros and cons of other languages. (more…)

Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords Review

headerThe idea of somebody going out and picking up a decade old licensed PC game’s sequel, giving it widescreen, 5K resolution, controller, and Mac and Linux support is nothing short of baffling to me. Not that it is the reason I decided to give this much praised title a go, but it did make the experience more enjoyable as I no longer had to deal with using a proprietary widescreen mod that did not work that well. That said, this review is only based on roughly twenty-five hours with the game, mostly because I can now tell when I reach a point where my opinion of a game will only grow more and more negative, and I’d rather stop playing while I can still view the game fondly. Punch Line Review

CoverThe more I think about it, the Zero Escape series is one of the biggest influences I had to start writing proper stories and developing whatever odd idea that popped into my head into a short story, novella, or novel. It’s been almost three years since I started, and I feel that I have gotten far, far better at writing, storytelling, characterization, plot outlining, and so forth. Sure, no one really gives a toss about my work, but I’m enjoying it and am doing exactly what I want to with a story that I hope I do finally put to bed, once and for all within the next few years… Anyhow, the writer of Zero Escape, Kotaro Uchikoshi, wrote this anime, I watched it, and here’s my thoughts on it in the form of a review. 0 Watamote The fuck you talking about porn bikes you neet go get shot you idiot why you existSo, I was hoping to start building a new computer soon, but my mother told me that I should put away 60-70% of my money instead of fifty-something, so that brought my funds down by about $600, so it will take a while to build up the additional $750 or so… I’m going to need to deal with my current computer for a while while trying to maximize my frugalness to avoid feeling a level of despair and inferiority, although I totally deserve that for being a disgrace to the glorious name of Autism. At least the state of Illinois is willing to pay for my college education and help me get a real full time adult job in a few years ‘cos my Autism is 100% official now. (more…)

Epic Battle Fantasy 4 Review

EBF4 4I feel as if I missed the prime time of Newgrounds as I did not discover the site until about 2006, when I promptly enjoyed a plethora of… it was mostly just sprite and somewhat shoddily drawn animated video game parodies along with stuff like TTA. The reason I bring this up is because I watched some of the flash animations of a similar nature done by the same artist, Matt Roszak, back in the day, and they were awesome to me back when I was thirteen So in short, I saw something that I found a bit nostalgic, picked it up for about four dollars, and played it for fifteen hours. 0 Yamada thanks for fucking everything up you miserable piece of shit fuck off and die in a fire leech on society's buttholeYes, my Punch Line review is still not done, I got frustrated with writing it and recently just finished the initial draft of my novel, Verde’s Doohickey, so I decided to put it off. Verde’s Doohickey is a story I am aiming to release on August 31st, probably sooner, but I still need to edit those 50,000 words. I’ll also get a game review out next week, and have been starting therapy. What have you been doing at the weekend? I’ve been organizing my stupidly constructed music library I barely touch. *Dies in a fire* (more…)

0 Nyarko Despair Is Your Goal Failure Your AmbitionMy Punchline review will be next week, I fell into a bit of a rut where I felt that I would be unable to appreciate it properly and as such put it off. It is the reason why I do not go through games as quickly as possible, as I feel that I will not be in the right mindset and as such will have an inaccurate opinion on the show. I know that is a messed up way to view things, but it’s why I asked my mother if I could start going to a therapist. Along with the gender bullcrap that I have developed because I’m an idiot who cannot be happy when they have no true reason to be unhappy. (more…)

Borderlands 2 Review

2015-06-25_00019I viewed the first Borderlands to be of so little value, to be so worthless, that it is the only game I threw in the trash. More specifically, I threw it into a ditch just outside of my childhood Kindergarten, which I walk past whenever coming home from school. That ditch only really existed to prevent flooding, by gathering excess sewage water and was likely an incredibly filthy place that I rolled around in regularly as a child. It also had these metal sewage gates that I always wanted to wander into, but I was too afraid of crocodiles to do so… Anyhow, I gave money to a Video Game Museum and was given Borderlands 2 was a reward. And despite having given it twenty hours about a year and a half ago, I decided that I would give the series a… fourth chance. However, I was only able to get about twenty-eight hours through the game before I hit my threshold and dropped the game like a backpack full of rocks, glad to be rid of it. (more…)

Rundown (6/21-6/27) Mild Mannered Panic

0 Train Panick by chibiibiruSo, the reason why I did not put out a review of D4 this week is rather simple. I have come to realize that my PC is not as top end as I believed it was when I made it two years ago. I have been saving up some spending money, and am near my goal of… seeing as how I need to get a new monitor, $1,700. I mean, it can run D4 no problem, but its framerate is inconsistent and I refuse to tolerate that. Instead, I made the terrible decision to play Borderlands 2, which I am only going to go through so I can, without a doubt, call it wet hot street trash. Also, I should be reviewing Punch Line this week, so, yeah, look forward to that, I guess. (more…)

For the record, the title is just a bit of a joke on my part, as are most of my Nigmabox Rundown titles. This E3 was pretty good as a whole, and had more diversity in general. More games of more types and there were some really nifty announcements as well. It was a fun time that did have some industry BS, but at least it was at a lower level than it had been the past few years. (more…)

And E3 is done… Kinda. Yes, I know the first proper day just happened, but after the press events, my work is mostly done, and 90% of the announcements are out of the way. It’s just impressions from here on out, which is just dandy in my book. However, Nintendo, Square Enix, and AMD all had press conferences, so I’ll just get to explaining what the blazes they were about, and what my Autistic mind thought about them. (more…)

Vain
You can easily decipher this title, right?

Okay, so, I am working full time this summer, for those who do not know, or just stumbled onto this post, and that means I cannot spend all day in E3 mode. It makes my nights very hectic, as I try to pick up the piece right after getting home, but I went through Microsoft, EA, Ubisoft, and Sony’s press conferences, amounting to over five hours of footage, while writing up some quick thoughts on the opinions on the video games, as I have been doing since 2012. Without further ado, I’ll just get right to it. (more…)

You are an ignorant fool if you deny the inherent sexiness of a lizard!

I really do love E3 as an event. Well, not in regards to actually going there, as it’s an awful physical place that is hot, loud, smells like an armpit, and is so chaotic in its construction that it is hard for anybody to get anything done. The actual press conferences are speeches to investors, casual observers, and the gaming community at large that often stir up disappointment and mockery while stirring up the needless hype the industry is built upon, but there is pretty much always something wonderful and worth talking about hidden beyond the bullcrap. It’s kinda shitty when you get down to it, but it is so much fun to follow, especially when taking it all in with friends, or with an eye on your Twitter feed. (more…)

0 E3 2015Steam Summer Sales started serenely and sadly my selection of specific software ‘s selling-price stayed- screw this shaz. I keep a list of reservation prices I keep for certain games, which I adhere to well, and there were not a ton of games whose selling price dropped beneath the reservation price. So far I got Metro Redux and Epic Fantasy Battle 4 because I have some nostalgia for mid-ots Newgrounds. I will get Momodora III, Dysfunctional Systems: Learning to Manage Chaos, and DreadOut as the sale ends, but will wait to see if there are any dailies. I set myself a limit of $100 to spend, which is harder because I need to now pay taxes on Steam purchases… (more…)
