Verde’s Doohickey 2.0: Sensational Summer Romp
July 3rd – Pier Parties and Peaceful Palavers

Part 1: Party at Navy Pier

Date: Friday, July 3, 2015
Time: 18:32 CDT (Central Daylight Time)
Location: Navy Pier, Chicago

As the afternoon sun hung high in the sky and people were set free to enjoy the holiday weekend, the streets of Chicago were positively abuzz with activity. Families, tourists, and lonesome locals all flocked to myriad attractions, filling the streets, sidewalks, and trains alike as they attempted to enjoy the thrill of the holiday before it actually began. There were many places where this could be seen, but few held a candle to the robust activity at Navy Pier. A premiere attraction on the city’s northeast side that boasted an utter deluge of attractions.

An education venue with the Chicago’s Children’s Museum, attracting parents and school classes alike through interactive exhibits. Copious amounts of eateries ranging from American staples like Starschmucks, Dunkarooz, or McMoe to more large scale taverns that promise overpriced food and liquor. Dozens of small shops hoisting some novelty or another, relying mostly on impulse purchases to get by, targeting people who would pay $20 for a branded T-shirt or mug. A botanical garden offered a reprieve from the coldness of industry with large exotic plants lining its halls. A Shakespeare theater promised a facsimile of class and stability to patrons of the arts. Venue halls hosted anything from parties to concerts. Historical placards and infographics were strewn about, regaling those with eyes as to the history of this hundred-year-old landmark. There was even a hotel for tourists who wanted to stay at a destination in and of itself.

Though, none of those things were what made Navy Pier an icon. The first was its Ferris wheel, standing tall and visible from kilometers away, it drew the eyes of people across the city, plainly visible from major thoroughfares such as Lakeshore Drive. It promised amusement offerings, while only having about three rides to speak of. The other was in the name itself. It was a pier. Surrounded by water to the north and south, the location had a distinct vibe unlike many other venues in the city. Attendees were greeted with a stream of boats would send them off into the lake and around the city, under the bridges, through the rivers, and up to its many marvelous sights.

It was a booming attraction during the summer months, and today was no different. From the fountain adorning its entrance to the end of the pier overlooking the lake, there were hundreds upon hundreds of people going about their evenings, and many more still arriving. After walking a kilometer from the Purple Line, a group of four young people looked on at this destination.

The first was Tony Neukar. Fresh off of his meeting with Verde to establish his male form as his default form, he was both dressed for the heat and looking good. He was an 18-year-old Black man with a “light skinned” complexion, coiled platinum blonde hair fashioned into a temple fade, with unusual yet calming gray eyes. At 190 centimeter tall and an athletic build visible through a white polo shirt and dark green cargo shorts, he definitely had a unique presence to him, yet he carried himself with confidence as he walked along his friends.

To his side was Gemma Stone, the TransSex form of Gem Stone, where he traded his tall and full teddy bear like form for something shorter, thinner, and curvier. This form retained Gem’s Hispanic light brown complexion, but cut him down to a mere 176 centimeters. His curly black hair billowed down to the middle of his back, and the rest of his physique was eye-catching to say the least. Wide hips, a plump rear, plentiful breasts, and a trim waistline all drew the eye, while the face retained more soft and girlish features, giving Gemma a sort of “Hispanic bagel girl” look. A look that was further sold by a breezy yellow top and faux jean shorts, both of which drew the eyes of passersby. Which was creepy on some level, but at least he was 18…

Past Gemma was Haruki Kurokawa, in her regular form. A 23-year-old Japanese/Mexican woman who registered as Mexican to most Americans on account of her tan complexion and general body type. Being a self-described “fat chick” with a notable gut, prominent rear, and wider frame compared to, well, Gemma for one. Her long black hair went halfway down her back, but it was kept contained in a large ponytail, keeping the hair out of her admittedly cute face, letting people plainly see her soft brown eyes. All of which was wrapped up in blue tank top and black shorts, neither of which gave much to the imagination.

Lastly, standing on the other end of the group from Tony, was Maxwell Flare, Maxxie’s TransSex male form. As a self-described “Blasian mutt,” Maxwell had a dark brown skin tone with black freckles sprinkled across her entire body, though mostly her face. She stood at a respectable 177 centimeters, but much of her body was decidedly average, if not mediocre, much to Maxxie’s chagrin. Her face was boyish and body was not particularly strong, overall lacking the harder features expected of a more mature man. There was a notable belly poking from under her chest, and fat could easily be plucked from anywhere. It was a problem of distribution more than anything, something that favored Maxxie, yet Maxwell was not so lucky. Styling herself could do much, but her hair was about average length and just kind of there, her eyes were plain and brown, and her outfit was similarly boring. With a short-sleeved light blue dress shirt and khaki shorts, she looked like she just got out of summer prep school, despite having graduated from Oransen High a month ago.

The four paused as they reached the fountain adorning the entrance of the pier, looking at each other as they confirmed what they were doing.

Tony: “And we’re here! Took longer than I would have liked, but them’s the breaks. None of you are thinking of backing down, are ya?”

Haruki: “No, but I’m regretting not bringing a water with. I guess I just took things like a K-M walk in your body for granted, Haruki.”

???(Gemma): “Hey now, we’re in public, the VD’s back in Oransen, and that’s over ten kilometers away. We’re stuck like this till we head home, and we gotta maintain kayfabe till then!”

???(Maxwell): “Most definitely, my radiant Gemma. As much as it may behoove me to assume another role at some points, it is necessary for us to behave as whom we appear to be to avoid ire or risk a petulant reputational stain.”

???(Gemma): “Hmm… it’s always surreal seeing Gem make my body speak like that. Ah well. Nobody’s gonna cower out, are they?”

???(Haruki): “I guess not. It’s good for the spirit to be thrown into another body and— so long as you don’t trap me again— I’m down for whatever. It’s all a learning experience, something smart people wish they could do. Though… maybe I should have gone as Haruya? I’m fine being a girl, I was one for 18 years of my life. It’s just… odd to go back to being a girl after claiming myself to be a man less than a week ago.”

???(Tony): “I get that Tony, I really do, and if you’re uncomfortable with something, you know—”

Tony(Haruki): “I know, I know! I can always call you guys.”

???(Tony): “You know it! …And thanks again for lending me your body. Let’s just say that being a hot young guy in Chicago’s a blast. Even better when I’ve got my sexy girlfriend by my side!”

As she said that, Haruki(Tony) wrapped her arm around Maxxie(Gemma), the two painting the image of an almost idyllic “young hot couple” as they fondly looked at one another.

Gem(Maxwell): “Oh, there is something so perversely pleasant seeing my femme form frolicking in such a manner!”

Tony(Haruki): “Uh, I guess? It’s just weird to see myself like that with anyone but Vid.”

Maxxie(Gemma):Embrace the weird, let it define you, and achieve your true self! …Anyway, we’ve got our tickets, we’ve got cash, we’re where all the people are, so I think we can quit yapping and start doing it! Operation Party at the Pier is Go!”

From that declaration, the merry batch of Haruki(Tony), Maxxie(Gemma), Gem(Maxwell), and Tony(Haruki) all marched forward to Navy Pier, becoming part of a large and shifting crowd of people as they walked along the south end. Shops, stands, and eateries lined the building to their left, while to their right they were granted shade from conveniently placed trees and the many boats lined up, inviting pier goers to leave and enjoy the city from the comfort and splendor of a boat. A promising proposition… if they weren’t also so loud.

Though the partially obscured sun was warm, the cool breeze of the lakefront whisked over them, with mild breezes that motivated more than they intimidated. The four to pressed on as they immersed themselves in the surroundings, watching people walk about. From small children who were seeing this massive establishment for the first time to old timers spending time with their family to people their age who were just enjoying living in the moment. The sheer breadth of people and their diversity was almost dizzying to comprehend, and when the four tried to go back to themselves, they were met with what was by now a familiar feeling. That of knowingly being someone else while in public.

Maxxie(Gemma) was dressed in a manner that practically beckoned people to stare at her, and as a girl who was not particularly showy, she found the glares to be pleasant. She casually threw her arms behind her as she walked, eyes looking at whoever was looking at her as she consciously added a wiggle to her walk, just for the sake of luring people’s eyes. Just to exploit their base instincts. Time after time, it seemed to work. It was enough to make Maxxie pause, asking what she wanted from her wish from Verde… before looking at the “man” next to her and deciding she still wanted what “he” had going.

Haruki(Tony) walked the streets with her day as Nazz still fresh in her mind, hoping to see a similar amount of eyes checking out her hot dude body. Tony wasn’t on the same level as the sculpted physique of Nazz, modeled after a middle-aged Ukrainian woman’s platonic ideal of a hot White boy. But as a tall, strong man who moved with Haruki’s best imitation of the desirable swagger of a Black teen boy, she was finding far fewer eyes staring at her. No White moms looking at her with clear lust, few White girls pointing at her with their eyes… but there were plenty of Black girls, and some Hispanic girls, who gave her not too subtle looks. She rolled her eyes as she reminded herself about the undying popularity of racism in this damn country, before realizing that it’s probably a good thing that racists aren’t checking her out. It’s best to starve those sorts.

Gem(Maxwell) had the social wherewithal to know that he was just another face in a sea of people, but he still made it a point to people watch, enjoying the little sights and snippets of larger stories he could glean. Family squabbles in progress, people experiencing memories that will last them decades, and chance interactions among strangers as they decide to just say hello and start talking. He fixated on this as the form of Maxwell offered him was not too remarkable. It was about the same weight as his usual male form, just shorter, and of a darker hue. It was not as extreme a contrast as what he had grown to expect from being the likes of Vivi or Babs, and while he could feel the subtleties of his new frame with each step, from the shape of his head to the dimensions of a foot, such things seemed far too minor at this point to be exciting.

Tony(Haruki) walked across the pier feeling more than a little exposed. As an athlete, he was accustomed to being out and about in breezy or tight clothes, but as he walked, he could not help but compare Haruki’s fatter frame to what he knew and took for granted. He had been many people so far, from adult women to his friend Gem and boyfriend Vidkun. Yet with his plump legs showing, his butt squeezed into shorts that only emphasized the size of everything, and a large ponytail poking out from his head, similar to what he sported this past winter, everything just felt off. It was fine when he was just sitting on the train, if a bit cramped, but now that he was out and about, getting stares from random people who saw him as “some fat Mexican girl who did not take care of herself,” it hurt his ego. Tony did not dislike Haruki or people of her shape, but wearing it was a different story. He sweated profusely, perspiration and a faint odor oozing his forehead to his crotch, only curbed by the breeze brushing over him.

The short walk brought them to the centerpiece attraction of Navy Pier, its Ferris wheel, already lit up before sundown and carrying people up and around every seven minutes. Crowds naturally formed around the wheel, with people spanning every spectrum of demographic trying to get on. Families, couples, and friends of all shades. However, getting inside a small box as the afternoon sun blared between buildings did not seem like it was worth the fight, and the rides around it where not much better. The musical carousel was similarly packed, and the wave swinger was just revving up for another rotation.

Haruki(Tony):Yeah, rides like this are a pain in the whole ass to wait for. But we got tickets, right Gemma?”

Maxxie(Gemma): “You know it, packed right and tight in you know where.”

As she said that, Maxxie(Gemma) pointed at her boobs before following the purse’s strap to her side, where the tickets were safely sealed.

Tony(Haruki): “S-So, what are we gonna do? It’s h-hotter than I thought it’d be and—”

Gem(Maxwell): “Mayhaps we should get some assuredly scrumptious ice cream as a treat?”

The group followed Gem(Maxwell)’s pointed fingers at an ice cream stand positioned near the entrance to the Crystal Gardens, which were closed off for the public in preparation of some event. Tony(Haruki) looked at the stand with a sense of guilt, staring down at his breasts through his tank top and the gut below as he pondered practicality and temptation in an unfamiliar form. Only for the tallest of the group, a de facto leader, to decide for them.

Haruki(Tony): “Of course we’re gonna have ice cream! We don’t got these per diems for nothing!”

Maxxie(Gemma): “Damn straight! Plus, this will make for a perfect experiment! Everybody, order to your mind’s preferences, and we’ll see how the flavor fares!”

Tony(Haruki): “Uh, haven’t we already figured that out? It’s mostly the body that denotes preferences, with the mind having some effect if people have existing preferences on it or—”

Gem(Maxwell): “Thou does not need to justify a dessert, Miss Kurokawa!”

Defeated, Tony(Haruki) went against his mind’s urges and listened to his borrowed body, joining the three as they all placed an order, grabbing waffle cones to minimize waste, a small wrapping protecting the cones from their hand germs. Through a routine transaction, the four walked away with a unique single scoop of ice cream in each hand. Cookies & cream for Haruki(Tony), chocolate peanut butter for Maxxie(Gemma), electric blue for Gem(Maxwell), mint chocolate chip for Tony(Haruki). The four continued to walk through the pier as they partook in their treats, assessing the flavors as they moved away from the heat and into the air-conditioned shopping center. While condensed for space, it was similarly popular, with people walking all about, and only a stray few in the nearby shops, grabbing overpriced necessities from convenience stores or a fountain drink. Others sat peacefully, either waiting for their companions or just relaxing someplace nice and cool.

Even if one had no intention of buying anything, it offered something pleasant to look at, a touch more interesting than Sweet Orchard Center, and a pleasant enough place to people watch. Having had a minute to eat it, allowing the totality of the flavors dance across their palates, the four finally began discussing their tastes.

Haruki(Tony): “Hmm… this tastes surprisingly similar, just with a more nebulous tang to it. Though, you can say that about any foodstuff with a different body. And I guess that isn’t too surprising. Everybody likes vanilla and chocolate cookies.”

Maxxie(Gemma): “Same! Chocolate and peanut butter is kind of a basic combination nowadays. It’s been a thang since the 70s. But it’s still the G.O.A.T. in my book. Even if something about the nuts don’t taste quite right. Can’t be sure if this is the ice cream of the buds though… this was an experimental oversight, wasn’t it?”

Gem(Maxwell): “It is profoundly predictable that my palate does not play nicely with electric blue.”

Haruki(Tony): “Uh, about that, the hell is electric blue? Blue isn’t a flavor, and how do you make it electric? Would that even do anything to ice cream?”

Maxxie(Gemma): “Shouldn’t you know, miss I got my GED when I was 16?”

Haruki(Tony): “Just ‘cos I was a science knack a decade ago doesn’t mean I tried electrocuting ice cream!”

Tony(Haruki): “Uh, isn’t it just a variant of blue moon?”

Gem(Maxwell): “Indeed. And most unfortunately, the flavor of marshmallow and Froot Loops appears to be an acquired one unpalatable to my current bodily abode.”

Haruki(Tony):Blue moon… is thing a Midwest thing or a ‘Haruki’s a basement goblin’ thing?”

Maxxie(Gemma): “Huh? I thought blue moon was everywhere and came out in the 90s. …And hol’ up a minute! Haruki, give us your review of your mint choco yum.”

Tony(Haruki): “It’s… it tastes like toothpaste to me. It’s like drinking chocolate milk right after brushing your teeth.”

Haruki(Tony): “Ooooh! Right, I should’ve warned you, but I just hate mint, can’t stand it. Gotta use kid’s toothpaste to keep my chompers clean.”

Tony(Haruki): “Right… so can we swap cones?”

The group then swapped their half-eaten cones for the other half of their experiment, to see if their bodies reacted properly to these new flavors. Almost immediately, just from the look on their faces, a consensus was made.

Gem(Maxwell): “Yet again, we have determined that the flavor factor lies primarily with one’s biological shell. Let’s avoid any such experiments for the rest of our night, for our mutual pleasure!”

Tony(Haruki): “I’m not going to argue. And here I thought everybody liked mint because of toothpaste…”

Haruki(Tony): “Since when have I represented the majority? I draw porn in a basement, dude.”

Maxxie(Gemma): “I never even liked Froot Loops or plain marshmallows, yet this is making me question that assessment.”

Equipped with ice creams of their bodies’ preferences, the merry batch walked outside and continued walking down the pier, noticing it get remarkably less populated as they passed by the hotel and its restaurant, before finally reaching the end. A couple dozen were around, taking photos of the lake in afternoon lights, of the pinkish orange hues of the clouds, or the giant placards describing this place’s history. It was a cool history, describing how Navy Pier functioned as everything from a jail to a school to a training center for soldiers before becoming an amusement center.

Maxxie(Gemma) jammed the last of her cone into her mouth before scampering to the end of the pier, planting a foot on the railing as she looked out into the waters. Past the stone breakwater and at the horizon, continuing, uninterrupted, as far as the eye could see, the other end obscured by the curvature of the Earth and sheer size of Lake Michigan.

Maxxie(Gemma): “Damn it is nice to live in a city like this. So much of the country lacks a sight like this. Ready access to the best kind of ocean, a freshwater ocean. A popping place whose quality can be stated through its population alone, drawing in people from all over the country, if not the whole damn world. And full of so many opportunities to acquire oh-so-convenient pleasantries. And to think, it’s all practically in our backyard!”

Haruki(Tony): “…Whatchu talkin’ bout, Gemma? It took us almost an hour to get here by train. What do you mean backyard?”

Maxxie(Gemma): “It means it’s just a day trip away, you pedant! C’mon, you speak my language and know what I mean?”

Haruki(Tony): “I know, I know, and… places like this remind me of when I was a little kid, just me, my parents, and Shiaka, heading out of Silicon Valley and into San Francisco proper, just basking at the sheer scale of the ocean. And, like you said, this may as well be a freshwater ocean.”

Tony(Haruki): “Y-Yeah, it’s really nice to have a place like this, but… it is a bit noisy and can get a little overwhelming. I’m sure the boats will be better, just us on the water, nothing to obstruct the breeze from any direction, the lights of the city in the distance…”

Gem(Maxwell): “If I may posit a hypothesis, you have only been on a boat once, Tony.”

Tony(Haruki): “Well… you’d be right. It was some party hosted by Frederickson Motorparts when Vid and I were, like, six. They let us on a boat they rented, we grabbed a bunch of food and just… looked out at the city together, amazed at the sheer scale of it and how big the lake was. We were just little squirts, so that was the coolest thing ever to us, and… I still feel a sense of completeness when I look at that skyline.”

Gem(Maxwell): “I must say I agree. It is so vast, yet it all functions. There’s a place for millions of people there and, no matter who you are, what you wish to do with your life, if you’re here, you can find your place, your calling, you just need to know where to look. Even to this day, much of the country is left stranded in isolated small towns, denied these opportunities, these luxuries, and I wish that we had the means to spread such things. If Chicago was made in this image in a mere 143 years, then could we not achieve the same thing across the country in a fraction of the time? We have the means, we have the capital, yet even this gem of a city remains marred by inefficiencies, inequality, and a lack of funding. Particularly in its southern side, where every dollar spent would go much farther.”

Tony(Haruki): “…You freak me out when you do that, dude. Don’t go from Gemlish to English on me like that!”

Maxxie(Gemma): “Nah, let him. It’s funnier that way!”

In this lull of conversation, Haruki(Tony) checked the sports watch on his wrist, reading 19:30, confirming that their wandering already ate up an hour of time.

Haruki(Tony): “We probably should split up. Gemma and I have got a date on the Ferris wheel coming up, and you two have that party boat reservation!”

Gem(Maxwell): “Curious. Was the plan not for us to stick together?”

Tony(Haruki): “Let me guess, you two waited too long to book tickets?”

Maxxie(Gemma): “Hey! We booked them ASAP— the day we scheduled this— but these tickets are a hot commodity this time of year!”

Haruki(Tony): “Yeah, and we figured you two should have the party boat. We can just enjoy the Ferris wheel.”

Tony(Haruki): “I… Forget it. I never liked heights anyway.”

Gem(Maxwell): “Oh? Does that mean we are going on a boat date, my dear Haruki?”

Tony(Haruki): “Heh. With you, sure thing Gem. Just, uh, don’t call it that in front of Vidkun. He’s not the jealous type but, you know, it doesn’t sound good.”

Maxxie(Gemma): “Hell yeah! Hook up, do whatevs, and make sure you get the most out of it, because, uh, those tickets weren’t exactly cheap.”

Haruki(Tony): “Okay, but that is your fault, Miss Moneybags.”

Maxxie(Gemma): “Moneybags? You serious? Both our families literally has millions in the bank and don’t need to work…”

Tony(Haruki): “I’m still 90% sure that’s Verde’s doing.”

Recognizing that the conversation was about to go sour, Gem(Maxwell) began pulling Tony(Haruki) away.

Gem(Maxwell): “Let us not question our place in the world, let us prepare for a night of merriment… by finding a restroom before our boat begins boarding. Gemma, dear, if you may provide us with the twin tickets.”

Upon Gem(Maxwell)’s request, Maxxie(Gemma) provided her swap partner with the tickets, and their quartet split in two pairs. One to pursue the pleasures of the pier in greater detail, and the other to venture to the lake for a less immediately accessible experience.

Part 2: The Wheel of Pleasure

Date: Friday, July 3, 2015
Time: 20:18 CDT (Central Daylight Time)
Location: Navy Pier, Chicago

As night crept slowly across the horizon, just a glimmer of sunlight remained, the clock struck true night and the real party at the pier began. Venues began stacking up, the dinner rush thinned as people started drinking without guilt, and a private party was popping in the middle of the acre-sized Crystal Gardens. Vibrant lights flashed, thumping EDM echoed through the glass, the plants were probably going as ballistic as plants could, and oodles of college kids were throwing down on the brick floor. LEDs and glow bands added erratic splashes of color. The smell of beer, weed, and young sweat was overpowering to anyone with a functional nose. And at the center of the venue stood a lone DJ, a fat table of equipment around them, a pair of fat speakers on stands, as they took their hands to the turntables and performed their set. …Or, perhaps it was better to call them paws.

Manning the DJ set was a person in a red panda mascot costume, wearing giant novelty purple shutter shades over its mascot head, a backwards baseball cap, and an oversized Chicago Bears T-shirt. …Which seemed like a furry faux pas, wearing a shirt representing one animal while the costume represented a different one. The banner in front of their equipment clearly labeled them as “Doctor Redd P. Good.” How they were able to perform a DJ set, something that required previse hand movements, with a full mascot costume, raised many questions. Fortunately, nobody around cared. If anything, it was a feature.

The bumping music, palm trees, lights, and person in a red panda costume painted an appropriately absurd pretense for people to cut loose, and they certainly did. Gyrating, grinding, and performing what could cynically be described as human mating dances as partners of all genders approached one another, accepting a social contract that, whatever happens here, stays here.

Among the less enamored set of party goers were probably Haruki(Tony) and Maxxie(Gemma). They stayed away from the main dance floor, with all the noise and action, and only had eyes for each other. Haruki(Tony), despite her typical shut-in artisan disposition, had studied enough to have an idea of how to move as a tall man on the dance floor. Far from the most composed, but when everyone else was inebriated, that was hardly notable. Maxxie(Gemma) was not much of a socialite either, despite her outgoing personality, yet with a curvy Latina body at her disposal, she had an inkling of how to use it. She shook what Gem lent her in whatever way felt good, whatever kept her partner’s eyes on her, and whatever drew random people to stare and gawk at her… Only to back away as they saw she was “taken” by a man taller and stronger than them.

With the music so loud, they did not bother trying to shout at each other, merely trying to mesh their moves together into something sensual, grabbing each other and leaning in for a spontaneous kiss. Tongues clashing as their bodies till moved to the frantic beats, heart racing as they realized what they were doing and how they could be seen by any onlookers. …All until an alarm blared from Haruki(Tony)’s watch, calling off their embrace. They silently filtered out of the party and back to the “pier park” where they saw the carousel, wave swinger, and Ferris wheel, all lit up as the last vestiges of day lingered.

Haruki(Tony): “C’mon, the fireworks start on sundown, let’s bounce!”

Maxxie(Gemma): “Whatever you say, boyfriend.”

Haruki(Tony): “Oh, shut it! I’m just your boyfriend for the evening, girlfriend.”

It was a zoo around the Ferris wheel, full of people trying to get a cabin in preparation for the fireworks, but capital has a way of putting some people above others. Upon flashing two tickets to a park worker, Haruki(Tony) and Maxxie(Gemma) were filtered out of the dozens of families and couples trying to get on the Ferris wheel in time and put into an express line.

20:25 was the time on their ticket, and they arrived just in time, a cabin waiting for them. As an artifact from twenty years ago, the cabins were a bit on the dated side, with bright red coloring, a door more comparable to a gate, and seats with railings for a back. The two sat together, settling on the seat facing north, and like the couple they were pretending to be, they wasted no time wrapping their arms around each other as the door shut, and they were sent upwards.

Maxxie(Gemma): “Huh, these seats seemed a lot comfier when I was a kid.”

Haruki(Tony): “And they were comfier when I had a real ass, not a man ass.”

Maxxie(Gemma): “Hmm… maybe it makes sense for them to replace the Ferris wheel. It works, but who likes leaning against metal bars like this?”

Their petty commentary came to a fault when the two rose high enough to see the north side of the city, all lit up, the sun reduced to a subtle glow on the horizon, the clouds shifting from pinks to dark blues. To navy if you will. So many destinations, so many places they could visit throughout the summer. It was a decently enticing offer normally, but with the prospect of going with so many people, going as so many people, it made the imagination go wild. For now though, the two were inclined to just sit back, relax, and watch the sights before them. Maxxie(Gemma) drew closer, practically crawling on Haruki(Tony) as they continued to “play” boyfriend and girlfriend. …Only for Maxxie(Gemma) to stop as she felt something beneath Tony(Haruki)’s cargo shorts.

Maxxie(Gemma): “I can see you like me.”

Haruki(Tony): “What can I say? I’m a man, and you’re a hot-ass woman.”

Maxxie(Gemma): “…What do you say we make this a bit more interesting? Let’s see who can come faster. You or the fireworks.”

Haruki(Tony): “Pfft, you’re gonna give me a handjob in a Ferris wheel?”

Maxxie(Gemma): “Handjob? Hell no, handjobs are boring! I’m gonna blow you away!”

Haruki(Tony): “Maxxie, you’re crazy. And that’s why I like ya.”

With both parties agreeing, Haruki(Tony) stood up, nudging Maxxie(Gemma) away before pulling down her shorts and briefs in a single tug. Swiftly, her 7 inch dick unfurled from its embrace, pointing forward. Tony(Haruki) had already checked out her goods before when taking a piss, but she smiled valiantly as she unleashed her hard cock. Maxxie(Gemma) looked out at the skyline, sunset just a moment away, and with the sizable Black dick before her looking more enticing than most, she knew what to do… but wished she brought something that covered her knees.

Haruki(Tony) sat bare assed on the seat, Maxxie(Gemma) kneeled until the dick was face height, and with her promise made, she stuck to it, shutting her eyes and inviting the penis into her mouth. Her wet tongue flapped against the cock, salty, strong, and as the odor of sex infiltrated her nose, she could confirm that it tasted like it smelled. Still, she breathed it in, adopting the mindset of an eager girlfriend, and proceeded to move like they did in her Japanese hentais. Lapping her tongue, pressing the dick against the top of her mouth, and taking care to keep her teeth away… unless the boy asked for it. Maxxie(Gemma) was slower, still learning the ways of maneuvering something like this in her mouth, putting her research into practice. Yet, as far as Tony(Haruki) was concerned, she may as well be a pro. So long as a dick is being caressed, it’s happy, but it’s happier when it’s wet and warm.

Haruki(Tony):Holy shit, you sure this is your first time?”

Maxxie(Gemma) did not respond, too preoccupied with the mission in front of her, and as she looked outside, she saw that the sun was completely gone. Darkness had taken hold, twilight was over, and she had to amp up her game is she wanted to meet her arbitrary goal. So, she decided to up the pressure, following up her slow build up with something more aggressive, actively sucking, moving her head back and forth, and just sending Haruki(Tony)’s dick for a ride.

Rather than resist or try to last longer, Haruki(Tony) allowed the fantasy before her to crystallize, letting her Haruki side phase away as she lost herself in this experience. The context of being this top tier of a man, having a girl who would make any sane person jealous, and one who loved “him” so much that she would suck dick in a place like this. It made her feel like a real big shot, ready to fire. She unleashed her load, busting in Maxxie(Gemma)’s mouth. Both of their eyes shuttered as this climaxed was reached, albeit for different reasons. For one, it was the satisfaction of a job well done, and for the other, it was something far less sophisticated.

A second of silence followed, only to be interrupted by the sound of a small explosion. Haruki(Tony) looked out to see fireworks bursting in the sky around her. The Ferris wheel was at its apex, a full 50 meters tall, and never in her life had fireworks looked so big, so majestic, and so detailed. Every spark of the marvelous pink burst before her seemed so much more vivid, and when mingled with the afterglow of a male orgasm, she knew this would stand as an unforgettable summer memory.

Haruki(Tony) leaned back losing herself in the experience and thrill, only for Maxxie(Gemma) to sit right next to her. At first looking at the fireworks, before looking at Haruki(Tony), pulling her head near. The two looked at each other with longing, went in for a kiss as they had back on ground. …But when Haruki(Tony) expected to get a mouthful of tongue, she got something far saltier. A dollop of cum slid into her mouth, and Maxxie(Gemma) turned away, smiling as she saw Haruki(Tony) look at her with utter shock. She froze, her mind blank, staring at the fireworks bursting around her, before swallowing the cum.

Haruki(Tony): “You coy little bitch, what the fuck was that about?”

Maxxie(Gemma): “Hahaha! Ah, you should have seen the look on your face!”

Haruki(Tony): “You just fed me my own cum!”

Maxxie(Gemma): “Yeah, so? Did it taste that bad?”

This was a question caused Haruki(Tony) to pause before offering a response.

Haruki(Tony): “It tasted like some crappy homemade soy sauce! …But, I sorta liked it? …lol. I guess what they say is true, everybody likes their own home brand.”

The two silenced themselves to look at the fireworks booming in the sky, the way the colors brightened up the air, how they reflected on the water, and where the sparks fell as the light dissipated. Every new entry was accompanied by a great bang, fully audible through the open doors of the cabin, practically reverberating through their bodies, but neither minded. If anything, it felt good, made them more aware of what they had just done, and how they were seen. Haruki(Tony) looked away as this bombardment continued and planted a kiss on Maxxie(Gemma)’s lips. This time with just tongue and a salty aftertaste.

Maxxie(Gemma): “Y’know, We really don’t have sex as much as we should. That was, what, our third time having doing it?”

Haruki(Tony): “Wait, really? We’ve got to fix that, pronto! You’re one of my favorite peeps, you know that, Maxxie?”

Maxxie(Gemma): “I do, but that doesn’t mean I don’t like hearing you say that.”

Haruki(Tony): “I just didn’t want to advance because I know about you and Jade and—”

Maxxie(Gemma): “Do I really need to tell you how a polycule works?”

Haruki(Tony): “Girl, there is no such thing as a normal polycule. Especially not when family gets involved. …But if you ever wanna go out and do things, you know I’m down! Hell, if we had a VD on us, I’d offer to get us a room, some drinks, and show you the pleasures of what Tony’s packing.”

Maxxie(Gemma): “Hey! Don’t threaten me with a hypothetical good time. …But after our trips, we should do something. Like, a realer date than this. Y’know what I mean?”

Haruki(Tony): “I do. …And maybe it would be cool if we were both dudes during it.”

Maxxie(Gemma): “Why, you wanna suck each other’s dicks on a Ferris wheel?”

Haruki(Tony): “In seven minutes? That’s a bit ambitious, don’t ya think?”

The two ballooned into laughter from their absurd conversation before reaching the bottom, the doors opening up, inviting them out and back to the park grounds. They could head home, but at only a little past 20:30, the night was still bumping, and there was still party to be had. …But first, they had some business to discuss.

Maxxie(Gemma): “So, did Verde give you your mission yet?”

Haruki(Tony): “Huh? Oh, that. Yeah, we hashed it out to see what would work, and after some back and forth, we decided that I’d need to take a road trip to Mexico, boy mode only. Apparently she needs me to accept being Haruya before I can become a better boy. Tony, Babs, and Gem, they’re all coming along and—”

Maxxie(Gemma): “Got enough room for me? If I just need to hang out with you to become a better boy, that’d be the easiest challenge ever.”

Not wanting to break her enthusiasm, yet needing to tell the truth, Haruki(Tony) looked at her girlfriend with an all too knowing look.

Haruki(Tony): “I was thinking the same thing, but…”

Maxxie(Gemma): “GARF! Denied again?”

Haruki(Tony): “We’ve got that big party scheduled for tomorrow, and Verde will probably give you a briefing on your special mission then.”

Maxxie(Gemma):Hmph! Well, if it’s as easy as going on a road trip, it’ll be no problemo. Yeah, it’s gotta be! Let’s try positive think!”

With a laugh, the pair continued down the pier, not caring about who was overhearing their conversation as they tried to eke out a bit more fun before the inevitable wave of chaos that tomorrow would bring.

Part 3: Party Boat Blues

Date: Friday, July 3, 2015
Time: 20:56 CDT (Central Daylight Time)
Location: Navy Pier, Chicago

A solid 500 meters away from the coastline, a party boat from Navy Pier was in the process of, well, party boating along. A vessel with a large deck, tables covered in food and drinks, about 50 occupants in total, a decidedly tiki theming, and speakers that blared pop music that in no way seemed appropriate for boats, much less tiki boats. The crew stood on standby, lighting cigarettes as they watched a barrage of twentysomethings get their groove on, hooking up, making out, and attempting to dance while on a boat, often fumbling if not falling over. While drunk, high, or otherwise acting like a bunch of fools, they were, without question, having fun… except for one person.

The youngest person on the boat, in both body and mind, was Gem(Maxwell), who was trying to chat up a trio of three young women, who looked to be fresh out of college. They were dressed all cute and trendy in what amounted to clubbing outfits, and all looking like they were about to throw Gem(Maxwell) overboard.

Gem(Maxwell): “I understand that we may have had a misunderstanding, but is it truly too much to ask for a dance? I was just hoping that we could—”

Party Girl A: “Oh my gawd! No means no, you fucking loser!”

Party Girl B: “Like, totally, do we even look to be on your level? Why are you even here? You thought it’d be easier to get girls if they couldn’t run away?”

Party Girl C: “There should be, like, a law to prevent wannabe predators like you from getting on boats.”

Party Girl A: “Yeah, and if you catch them, you know what the punishment should be? You throw them off!”

The trio of catty bitches chuckled and Gem(Maxwell) silently sulked away to the back of the boat. Away from the lights, from the music, and with nothing of note beyond Tony(Haruki), sitting on a storage chest that doubled as a bench. Without needing to say anything, Gem(Maxwell) silently joined his companion.

Tony(Haruki): “Men are pigs who only want a piece of meat, and women are bitches who only want meat of a specific cut…”

Gem(Maxwell): “That is a trifle bit hyperbolic, don’t you think—”

Tony(Haruki): “I know it is, I just… Maxxie and Haruki didn’t know what kind of people would be on here, I’m sure, but I really wish I was back on the pier right now. I wish I was home right now, in my body.”

As he spoke, Tony(Haruki) gestured at his body, emphasizing his current girth.

Gem(Maxwell): “I agree. I am none too fond of being around people who have a dominating preference for superficial flavors of persons. I made certain to behave myself, asking politely yet directly, and earnestly desired to be acquainted with them. Yet they expressed such hostility I had to query why they would even attend such a function as this, especially when clubs are far more accessible and economical.”

Tony(Haruki): “I agree with you. But… I think you’re more used to being thought of as a weirdo, Gem. No offense.”

Gem(Maxwell): “It would take much for me to be offended by anything you say, Tony. I still consider you and Vid to be my greatest friends of all.”

Even though Tony(Haruki) knew that, he could not help but smile as Gem(Maxwell) so freely admitted that fact.

Tony(Haruki): “Th-Thanks. I’m lucky to have a friend like you. And, being here, like this, I realized that, gee, I’m lucky to have a lot of things. During high school, I had a certain status, I guess you could say. As a member of the track team, I was pretty sociable, friendly around others, and because we were all in school, we had some common ground. And more than that, I was used to being treated a certain way.”

Gem(Maxwell): “You were accustomed to being seen as a tall, athletic, and attractive Black woman with long, striking silver hair. Currently, you are not that. The majority of people around you, who have seen you today, merely see you as a ‘fat Mexican woman.'”

Tony(Haruki): “Yeah. And, well, I am used to being seen as other people. At least I think I am… maybe I’m just getting there. It’s just that I’m not used to being seen as… undesirable. Which is, well, it’s, um… the people here don’t seem to appreciate what Haruki has. And… I don’t either. Being fat isn’t fun. I feel hot, sweaty, and like I’m just eating up more space than everyone else. And, well, I can’t run, and running is still a big deal to me, you know. I can’t even try to run now, because we’re on a boat!”

Frustrated, Tony(Haruki) shook his head to and fro, nearly falling off the chest before Gem(Maxwell) grabbed him.

Tony(Haruki):Ugh. I miss my pretty privilege. I don’t know how to act, let alone compete in an environment like this. And I don’t even want to eat because people would think I’m just a fatty eating like a fatty. Haruki was confident like this, Maxxie is a bit chunky, but she was always happy with her shape, and I’m just not happy with this. I don’t know how to act here, I can’t even fall back on school stuff! Haruki is good enough to have a legacy at our school, but me? …I’m no Haruki. I can’t make all this work for me!”

Sensing that there was little he could do to appease his friend, Gem(Maxwell) patted him on the back, nearly going in for a hug, before standing up.

Gem(Maxwell): “I’m going to go grab some stuff for us. All we had for dinner was ice cream.”

As he left, Tony(Haruki) said nothing, just bemoaning his current mood and sulking as he looked at the sea. At the city in the distance, lit bright, reminding him of the possibilities. He could be anywhere there, but instead, he was here.

Tony(Haruki): “At least the Ferris wheel only lasts 7 minutes, not 60.”

Before too long, Gem(Maxwell) returned bearing paper plates with two chicken Parmesan sandwiches and buffalo chicken bites along with two red plastic cups of pineapple juice. The fact he carried all of this, on a boat, in another body, really spoke to his inner sense of balance.

Gem(Maxwell): “I could have gotten some pizza, but this seemed easier.”

Tony(Haruki): “This is perfect. Thanks, Gem.”

The two wasted little time eating up their late dinners, looking out at the Chicago skyline as they chewed in silence, both appeasing growing appetites. The food itself was fine, clearly prepared earlier in the day and reheated, but when it’s chicken, bread, cheese, and sauce, it’s hard to screw it up. They filled their spirits and bodies in parallel, and by the time they were just about finished, they saw someone creep out from the side of the boat. A person they looked at curiously, thinking they had recognized her before actually recognizing her. Not from a personal encounter, but from a photo sent in the Swap Posse Telegram group. Her name was Ruby Blitz, and the most succinct way to describe her was probably as Nazz’s casual girlfriend. Or three-time-in-a-month sexual partner.

Ruby was a 27-year-old Black woman who stood at 163 centimeters, her complexion on the darker side of the spectrum and her black coiled hair loose onto her shoulders. Her body was covered by a simple yet eye-catching white dress that clung to her figure, emphasizing her ample curved, accentuated by her fairly recent weight gain. This had the side effect of making her clothes look particularly tight, but that was hardly a bug to most. She stood confidently, her body propped up by matching white heels, and with a cocktail in her hand, she looked like she was here to either flirt… or offer some advice to the younger folks before her. Fortunately, or unfortunately, it would prove to be the latter.

Ruby: “Well, at least you’re both going home with someone. And it sounds like you don’t want to be anything more than friends. A shame. That is often the most reliable avenue to a healthy relationship. You don’t hear about a lot of long-time friends getting divorced. …I’m sorry, where are my manners. Here I am, eavesdropping and acting like I know your problems better than you.”

Tony(Haruki): “H-Hey Ruby, surprised to see you here of all places. I’d figure the immediate care place needed—”

Ruby: “Uh, how do you know my name? You… did you come to my clinic? Oh, this is the hardest part of my job sometimes…”

Gem(Maxwell): “No, you are mistaken, Doctor Blitz! We merely know of you through our friend, Nazar Nemirovsky.”

Hearing Gem(Maxwell) pronounce Nazz’s name with a Ukrainian accent gave her pause… before she realized what he was actually saying.

Ruby: “Oh, oh, so you… you know Nazz, and he told you about me? Ha! This city is big, but meet enough people, and you’ll find connections. Everybody knows somebody. Ah… where was I? I might not know what ails you, and don’t have all the answers, but I do know this: If you are not happy with your body, change it. Human beings are more elastic than you may think, and these days you can shapeshift with enough time and money. But it does not take much to change what you eat and do, to put in effort to become the best ‘you’ you can possibly be. And no matter what form that may take, do not let what others tell you what to do. All my life, I forced myself to be a skinny twig, even if it meant skipping meals.”

In the middle of this speech, Ruby downed her cocktail and grabbed an uneaten buffalo chicken bite from Gem(Maxwell)’s plate.

Ruby: “I did it because I was terrified of fatphobia, and did not want to be seen as unprofessional for being overweight. That is, an overweight Black woman. White men can be fat. White women can be fat. And Black men can be fat. But a Black woman? I just knew the answer. I held myself up to those impossible standards until earlier this year. It’s like something inside me finally woke up, and I stopped being so conscious of my image. Saying, to hell with it, let my work show for myself, as I am damn good at what I do, and I don’t need to be a size four for that.”

A moment passed after Ruby made this comment, Tony(Haruki) and Gem(Maxwell) both digesting her words… except her message was a bit opaque. She was talking about how becoming fatter made her happy, and how systematic fatphobia can be used as a tool to deny people positions… before talking about how she stopped caring and became a heavier person than she used to be. Except that appeared to make her more desirable in the big two-zero-one-five. …Was she just drunk?

This unfurling of logic left Tony(Haruki) and Gem(Maxwell) perplexed. But as the time without any comments compounded, both decided to take the path of least resistance.

Tony(Haruki): “Y-Yeah, I get it. We need to decide on what we want, and work towards it. Because our lives are in our hands, and everybody can change what they look like. Thanks, Ruby.”

Ruby: “Heh. Glad you got something out of that, I’m about four drinks in, and that’s when I become a drunk auntie, if you know what I mean!”

Gem(Maxwell): “I believe I can infer.”

Ruby: “You’re both younger than me, so be sure to not wait until you’re 27 to begin your metamorphosis, the system be damned! Buh-bye!”

On cue, Ruby departed back to the rest of the party, leaving Tony(Haruki) and Gem(Maxwell) alone once again.

Tony(Haruki): “…She had a point, but I think that it would be better if the real Haruki and Maxxie heard it.”

Gem(Maxwell): “Indubitably!”

As the two sat, finishing off their remaining chicken bites, the music flipped over to a new track, bombarding the boat with further noise, making any conversation on the front nearly impossible.

Tony(Haruki): “…So, you just wanna chat while we wait for this party to be over?”

Gem(Maxwell): “Absolutely. My second choice would be to attempt night swimming.”

With a laugh, the two continued to enjoy one another’s company, in isolation, while young, dumb, and hot people made merry as they listened to the worst hits of summer 2015 blare on. Tony(Haruki) and Gem(Maxwell) had not succeeded in their objective, but they at least got something out of it.

…As for Ruby, she remained at the side of the boat, sipping another drink, this time a Diet Coke, as she looked back at the party goers. Young, dumb, and clearly not what she was looking for. She sighed before pulling out her phone, looking at a photo of Nazz, looking like she was about to text him… only for her phone to ring instead. She aggressively rolled her eyes before opening a door to the interior of the boat and its single tiny restroom. It was small and stunk like barf, but it was quiet at the very least.

Ruby: “Hello, what do you want?”

A silence followed as Ruby awaited a response, and when she did, she… spasmed. Her body nearly falling down, her phone nearly dropping into the toilet, before she regained her footing, her brown eyes looking ever so slightly different as she recovered.

Ruby: “Yes. I made contact. …They were not who they claimed to be, that much is certain. …Yes, I will continue to observe and report. Just don’t keep me waiting all summer.”

Part 4: Traumatic Reflections

Date: Friday, July 3, 2015
Time: 20:46 CDT (Central Daylight Time)
Location: Jade and Caroline’s House

Night fell upon Oransen, and with it came a palpable tranquility. A cool wind brushed in from up north. Lightning bugs littered the yards with a pleasant sporadic glow— an inextricable element of the midwestern summer experience. The scent of barbecue littered the air as people wrapped up their cooking for the night and turned in. Summer proper had just started. It was warm without being overbearingly hot. And there was a palpable joy given this time of year, knowing that tomorrow would be both a Saturday and a national holiday.

Truly, there was not a better night to spend outdoors with ones you loved, and at Jade and Caroline’s house, four members of the Swap Posse were doing just that. All were cozily scrunched together on a particularly wide bench in the backyard, with an ice cream cone in each hand. Though, in natural Swap Posse fashion, they were not who they appeared to be, having undergone a swap earlier in the day.

Jade had taken up residence in Shiaka’s body, granting her all the related features. Her natural tan complexion, straight blonde hair that curled after it reached her shoulders, dark blue eyes, short stature of only 157 centimeters, and a pair of breasts that were a bit too large for her tiny frame. She had a distinct beauty, doll-like in certain respects, enhanced by her choice in clothing, a floral pattern summer dress. One long enough to reach her ankles, and high enough to obscure the plentiful scars spanning her chest to her upper thighs.

Terra had hopped into Jade’s skin, and all the related meat stuffs. She had her fair complexion, the poofy curly brown hair that reached down to her chin, bright emerald eyes, decently tall stature of 173 centimeters, and slim body all around, chest included. They were just big enough to have some presence on her person. As a child with an 18-year-old’s body, she took this opportunity to dress it up, wearing a cream-colored crop top, pink jacket, and cut off jean shorts kept tucked around her waist with an unnecessary yet stylish pink belt.

Though, there was one element of Terra(Jade)’s appearance worth taking note of. Buried beneath her hair lied a pair of amethyst studs, installed by Verde and Abigale after her she got up to some particular excursions. How exactly they worked and how they tracked her mind as it was shuffled between bodies was unknown to all but Verde and her wives, but… some things people were better off not knowing.

Caroline conversely squeezed inside Terra. As an 11-year-old, she looked particularly tiny next to those around her, but no less content. Her long black hair was flowing past her shoulders, framing her mid-tone brown complexion, while her light brown eyes flickered as she stared at the outside light shining overhead. As a body in the early stages of puberty, it was growing precipitously and developing more adult features, but despite Terra’s desires, was still unambiguously the body of a kid. Standing as a brisk 148 centimeters, being considerably skinny, and wearing clothes that seemed to reflect her age. She wore a light orange T-shirt with the word Funny’s written on it, a pair of wings underneath, and the Japanese word for yellow underneath them, while her bottom was covered by a far simpler pair of black shorts.

This left Shiaka to occupy Caroline’s form. Her blonde hair down, a yellow scoop neck top clinging to her chest, and a pair of dark gray capris on her legs. She looked just old enough to be immediately read as the mom in this group of kids despite, mentally, being a couple months past 18.

They sat idly, enjoying the sight of the backyard at night, of Caroline’s garden full of growing vegetables, and the large tree that cast shade during the day. However, in instances like this, conversation is an inevitability, and the first one to trigger it was none other than Caroline(Terra).

Caroline(Terra): “You know girls, there is a reason why I invited you all here for dinner. I wanted to… ask you about something?”

Shiaka(Caroline): “Hmm? You really don’t need to make a big deal about this, Caroline.”

Jade(Shiaka): “Yeah, Mo… it’s so weird to call you Mother when you look like this.”

Caroline(Terra): “I was just thinking about Verde, and how she promised to do something special for us if we went along with her plans for the next two weeks. She has the ability to do anything, and mentioned before that she could even alter people’s memories. So, I got to thinking, what do I want? I have a house, a lovely daughter, plenty of money, and Reyn and I are, well…”

Terra(Jade):We know.”

Caroline(Terra): “And you all know about how things went with Bryce. I like to think I’m over it. Therapy helped a lot in the immediate aftermath, and I still have plenty of life ahead of me, but… do I want to remember my time with him. How he beat me, how he controlled me, forced me to be his perfect little plaything. I know that she can just make all those memories… disappear. Just seeing Nazz redo his life like that, it made me feel inspired.”

Jade(Shiaka): “Uh, wait, you’re not planning on making yourself 22 or something? Because that would… take some getting used to. Zoe seems to be adjusting well to his brother, but that—”

Hearing this suggestion, Caroline(Terra) nearly fell over, yet barely balanced herself before her ice cream could even leave her hand.

Caroline(Terra): “Oh no! That’s not what I’m talking about. For as much as part of me wouldn’t mind starting things over with Reyn, both of us your age, I feel I already got that experience during our getaway. It was even chronologically appropriate, with 90s tech and everything. …But no, I’m only considering erasing my memories. Or, maybe, replace them with something better. She’s proven herself plenty capable of doing that before.”

Jade(Shiaka): “…Even that, Mother, I think is too much. While I wish that you never had to go through this, that Bryce wasn’t a fucking bastard of a man, it’s something that happened to you. Something Verde taught me, and I don’t even know if this is intentional, is that… memories do shape who we are, who we want to be, and to remove them would mean erasing part of oneself.”

As Jade(Shiaka) explained her perspective, Shiaka(Caroline) jittered in her seat, taking a bite out of her waffle cone before standing up, speaking while looking out into the distance.

Shiaka(Caroline): “I agree, absolutely. I spent so much of my childhood dealing with that attack, trying to recover mentally, and build my faith, my confidence, up to a level where I could face the rest of the world. I’m sure that some people would look at that, look at the fear that consumed me, and think that it defined me, that I would want to get rid of it. And I think, at some point in my life, I would have wanted that. But not recently, and especially not now. I wish that never happened to me, but… it did. I withstood the fear, strived to achieve happiness, to lead a normal life, and it’s been months since I’ve had a panic attack. Since I had a freak-out. I am stronger, and I like to think that, in some way, I’m a stronger person than I would have been if that hadn’t happened to me.”

As she finished her heartfelt speech, Shiaka(Caroline) turned around, smiling with two trails of tears on her face.

Shiaka(Caroline): “Jade, could you please, uh, lift my dress. Show my scars…”

Nodding, jade(Shiaka) pulled up her floral dress and revealed Shiaka’s scars. They were large, still discolored even after a decade, and uneven. They did not hurt, they were not hard to move, yet they were more sensitive than the rest of her body. Whether that was good or bad… depended on who was wearing her form.

Shiaka(Caroline): “To me, my trauma— my scars— are what makes me who I am, and I would never want to forget that, no matter what.”

Caroline(Terra): “You… You make a good point, and phrased it so well. …Am I weak for wanting to forget?”

Shiaka(Caroline): “Of course not.”

Upon saying that, Shiaka(Caroline) grabbed Caroline(Terra)’s hands, holding them tightly. It was an endearing sight to behold, that of a mother holding a young girl’s hands to reassure her. But from Caroline(Terra)’s perspective, it looked like her own body was about to give her a pep talk.

Shiaka(Caroline): “Just because something works for me, that doesn’t mean it’s the only way to cope with trauma. Different people are different, have different minds, and as victims of trauma, we need to accept that, to celebrate that, as it will help us make a better, gentler, world. I can only speak to what has worked for myself.”

Terra(Jade): “Shiaka, when you say things like that, I can’t help but wonder if you’d make a good therapist. Maybe even a motivational speaker…”

Shiaka(Caroline): “Oh, absolutely not. I cannot imagine being in front of a crowd like that. There are still many things I need to overcome, and I don’t think I even want to be that type of person.”

Jade(Shiaka): “I agree with Shiaka. My trauma was nowhere near as bad as either of yours, but I—”

Shiaka(Caroline): “Jade, please don’t view it like that. Trauma is not a contest, and… what happened to you was just terrible! You had your body stolen, people thought you were a school shooter, you almost got raped, you were shot, abducted by the military, and… I don’t even want to know what that other Abigale did to you to make you… like that.”

Terra(Jade): “Yeah, uh, you experienced what it was like to kill all of us… and destroy Oransen.”

Caroline(Terra): “And then you had to sit with that knowledge for months, alone, with nobody you could confide in. At least… at least I had you and Shiaka had her family.”

Remembering the events of The Malice of Abigale Quinlan put a dampener on the four’s collective moods, and having finished their ice cream, they didn’t have a sweet treat to numb the pain. While it was true that not even Jade recalled the true extent of the trauma, having blocked out most of Kuro Abigale Quinlan’s abuse, that did not stop the others from sympathizing.

Jade(Shiaka): “Even that, I would not want to forget about all of that. Being in Abigale’s body, dealing with Peatrice, dealing with all of these impulses of rage and hatred, it… it helped make me who I am today. I might not have Shiaka’s physical scars. And thanks to Verde, I didn’t need any surgeries that would leave me scarred. But deep down, in my mind, I can still feel them. And no matter the form, a scar is a scar.”

Shiaka(Caroline): “Well said, Jade! We all carry our own traumas, and that is what makes us who we are. Getting past it will only make us stronger.”

Terra(Jade): “…Were you referring to me when you said that, or just you three?”

All eyes landed on Terra(Jade) as she made that comment. She had mostly been listening since the conversation began and looked as if she felt she did not belong here.

Jade(Shiaka): “Well, I’d say so. I still remember when you approached me, when I was in Maxxie’s body, and the hurt that was in your voice when you told me you were transgender.”

Terra(Jade): “I know, but… I don’t think that’s really trauma. I was trying to be a boy, trying to live as one, it did not work, and now… now I’m me. I’m Terra. Every day that passes, I’ll have spent a growing percentage of my life as Terra, and as time goes on, I might just forget who I was beforehand. Not because of trauma, but because… my problems were fixed with a snap of Verde’s finger— a god snap! It was embarrassing needing to go to my doctor and tell them everything, but… that didn’t even happen anymore, did it? As far as the world is concerned, I have always been Terra, and… it becomes easier to believe that with each passing day.”

Jade(Shiaka): “…Most of that also applied to me, but it just sounds weird hearing my body refer to itself as Terra.”

Shiaka(Caroline): “At this point, I think we can say that body swapping makes most conversations a lot more confusing…”

The four nodded along in agreement, reminding themselves of who was who.

Caroline(Terra): “I have to say I’m impressed by how mature your perspective on this is, Terra. It’s easy to forget you just graduated fifth grade.”

Terra(Jade): “Being around you guys… I feel that I need to grow up fast, and I wish I was as mature as you. Maybe I wouldn’t need to wear these dumb earrings if that was the case. Stupid fun police. People my age used to have sex 500 years ago…”

Caroline(Terra): “I’ll choose to ignore that last comment. …But that does raise an interesting question, Terra. What if, instead of losing memories, you asked Verde to help you gain memories? Memories of your life from ages 12 to 17, and formally make you 18 in both body and mind? …Purely as a hypothetical!”

Terra(Jade): “…I like that idea. I really like the idea of just skipping over adolescence and getting the opportunity to do all the fun travel and sex you’re all having fun with.”

Jade(Shiaka): “W-What are you talking about—”

Terra(Jade): “Don’t you patronize me! Especially not when I am in your body. How many times have you had sex with my sister?”

Jade(Shiaka): “…I wasn’t counting.”

Terra(Jade):Precisely! Everybody’s getting laid— several times a week— except for me! …But I’ve talked about mental changes enough with Maxxie to know that getting artificial memories would be a bad idea. Identity is a weird and mushy thing, and if you add more, then you change who you are. Maxxie called it identity death, and… I don’t want to accidentally kill myself! Who knows what I would be like? I don’t want to become someone I hate! That’s… that’s basically the whole reason I transitioned. Because I wanted control over who I would become. Oh… Oh.”

As Terra(Jade) mused herself into a state of despair, Caroline(Terra) began comforting her, patting her on the back. It would be a sweet sight normally, but with Terra being patted by her original body, it just looked strangely uncanny.

Terra(Jade): “Ugh… who even made childhood like this? As a kid, you want to do nothing more than grow up so you can do all the cool stuff, and when people grow up, they cling to youth and wanna go back. Aaahhh! What is this di… dichaw…”

Shiaka(Caroline): “Dichotomy?”

Terra(Jade): “Yes! Exactly!”

Jade(Shiaka): “Yeah, growing up sucks in that respect. You have plenty of time but you want for stuff.”

Caroline(Terra): “And once people reach my age, they just want their time back…”

Shiaka(Caroline): “…And the scary thing is that Verde can just fix that for people, just look at Nazz…”

Terra(Jade): “…Ugh. Jade, do you mind if I sleep in your body? I think I need to work some things out.”

The nuance of that line was lost on Shiaka(Caroline) and Caroline(Terra), but Jade spent enough time around Maxxie, and by extension Terra, to understand what she meant. And that she should not say no. Besides, she was already halfway through the back door

Jade(Shiaka): “Fine by me. Shiaka?”

Shiaka(Caroline): “At this point, I don’t think we even need to ask. But it is late. Caroline, do you mind if we—”

Caroline(Terra): “We have the guest bedroom for a reason, and our sofas are always open to a friend.”

Shiaka(Caroline): “Then I think I should get ready for bed. After all, we have no idea what Verde has in store for us tomorrow.”

Jade(Shiaka): “Yeah… but I need to talk to my mother about a few things before then.”

Caroline(Terra): “Sure thing Sweetie. …But both of you, please remember to brush your teeth before going to bed! I don’t want to have to ask Verde to remove any cavities.”

With an affirmation, Shiaka(Caroline) joined Terra(Jade) in returning inside, giving Jade(Shiaka) and Caroline(Terra), looking more like ethnically confused sisters than a mother and daughter, the opportunity to speak in relative privacy.

Caroline(Terra): “…Are you worried about the trip?”

Jade(Shiaka): “After everything I’ve been through, I’m not worried about traveling to another country. [We speak pretty good German, have our essentials packed and have a travel plan on the books.]

Caroline(Terra): “I know, I just have this sense of guilt about leaving somebody behind when traveling.”

Jade(Shiaka): “…You think you’re really going to miss Reyn that much?”

Caroline(Terra): “No, I… I think it’s just jitters. I’m sure we’ll have a wonderful time. Plus, I’ll get my much-needed dose of concentrated Jadeium. The Germany trip was incredibly refreshing, so I’m sure we’ll both gain a new perspective after being away from the States for a while.”

Jade(Shiaka): “Mother, one could argue that the last thing we need at this point is another new perspective.”

Caroline(Terra): “Oh, you know what I mean! I just don’t want to push you too much. I never do.”

Jade(Shiaka): “I know Mother and… could you please not have these conversations with me while in Terra’s body, I know to look beyond that, but it’s really distracting when you’re a child.”

Caroline(Terra): “Okay, okay, next time I’ll be sure to do it while in Gem’s body or something.”

Jade(Shiaka): “That would be… better? Maybe? Ugh. Let’s… let’s just get ready for bed.”

As the awkwardness became too much, the mother turned child and child turned friend both walked back into their home, for another odd night in their summer-long odyssey.

Gaiden July 3rd: Trying to Write A Body Swap Research Paper

Date: Friday, July 3, 2015
Time: 20:58 CDT (Central Daylight Time)
Location: Casa del Dusk

Though the Swap Posse had gotten rather little use of it over the past month, Verde’s rented mansion was a reprieve available to all who were part of this polycule. A place for them to hang out, bang out, or make merry in miscellaneous manners. It just lacked the same intimacy of one’s true home, the novelty of a water park, the service of a restaurant, the possibilities of a city, and the iconography of the Flare Residence. Yet, it was still here, and in the living room two members of the Posse were making great use of it.

Zoe Xing sat on an armchair, a laptop on his lap, practically hunching over as he stared at the screen, impatiently tapping the frame of the laptop. Per the VD 2.0.2 update, he no longer needed to wear glasses, allowing his hazel eyes to shine unobstructed. His complexion remained light despite the ample time he, or his body, spent outside, while normally slick black hair was left disheveled. Wearing a navy polo and shorts, he was certainly not dressed to impress. Though, with his slim, athletic, 191 centimeter tall figure, he could wear anything short of a fat suit and garner looks of desire from people of all genders.

Vidkun Gaimz had positioned himself at a wooden coffee table, treating the table as a desk as he typed away at his laptop, rewriting something with a frustrated fervor. His back were placed against a couch and legs under the coffee table. It did not seem terribly comfortable, but it was at least a different way to sit. His pale, freckled face was locked in a scowl as he wrote, dull green eyes laser focused on his screen. Once he finished his latest paragraph, he took a hand through his red hair, cut short, short enough to prevent any waves or curls, but densely thick. He then threw his hands up behind the couch in fatigue or frustration— perhaps both— as he stared up at the ceiling. If not for the oversized medium purple T-shirt over his chest and the fact his legs were under a table, it would be clear how skinny he was, borderline underweight, not that he minded. After all, he chose this form— chose to embrace it as his default, casting aside his old live as Vivian to become Vidkun full-time.

Vidkun:Ugh! Honor’s College Prep didn’t prep me for this shit!”

Zoe: “You do not need to tell me that, Vid. We were in the same class.”

Vidkun: “I know I don’t need to. I’m just so frustrated. It all sounded so simple when I pitched it three weeks ago.”

Zoe: “That was before we gained access to TransSex forms. Before you decided to transition to Vidkun.”

Vidkun: “Yes, I know, but… we are trying to write a research paper based on our lived experiences. It shouldn’t be taking us this long just to compile and structure our notes.”

Zoe: “Maybe we’re doing it the wrong way. We are merely updating a folder of Google Docs on these laptops, and that does not seem like how actual researchers go about doing things. “

Vidkun: “There are no shortage of tools out there, but we don’t know how to use them, what the right tool’s for the job, and to switch over to a new tool just takes MORE time. I’m just trying to figure out the structure.”

As Vidkun sulked, literally sliding under the coffee table, the front door to this oversized and under filled house swung open, revealing Abigale Quinlan. Or rather, Shin Abigale Quinlan. She was an exceptionally tall woman, standing at 200 centimeters in stature, with an athletic, but thoroughly toned form. Her obsidian black hair was cut clean and kept straight, reaching her shoulders, complexion was a dark brown with a high level of ambiguity behind her true ethnic origins, and eyes were a captivating crimson. She was continuing her regular wardrobe of red and black with a red V-neck T-shirt that offered a slight glimpse at her modest breasts and a pair of black leggings that wrapped around her waist and rear.

Zoe and Vidkun both looked over at Abigale as she returned, carrying a huge paper bag with the familiar logo of the local restaurant icon of Pita Inn.

Abigale: “That place manages to be a damn zoo at all hours of the night.”

Vidkun: “I know, there’s a reason why we sent you.”

Zoe: “What Vid meant to say is ‘Thanks for bringing us food, Abigale.'”

Vidkun: “Sorry, sorry, I’m just trying to make sense of this crap!”

Abigale: “You can make sense of it after you eat! It’s 21:00 and you two still haven’t had your dinner.”

As Abigale spoke, she systemically unpacked the massive bag of food onto a nearby table. This mansion had a proper dining room, but any table you put food on is a dining table to some people.

Vidkun: “We had something to eat at 16:00. And in other places all around the world, like Spain, they don’t eat until—”

Before Vidkun could continue, Abigale slapped his laptop shut and held a wrapped thing of foodstuff in front of his face.

Abigale: “[We’re not in Spain, so eat your damn falafel sandwich, you American bastard.]”

Technically, Abigale said that in Latin American Spanish, not Spain Spanish, but the effect was the same for Vidkun. He grabbed the sandwich from Abigale’s hands and hoisted himself from under the coffee table, stretching for a moment before walking over to the table, where Zoe had already grabbed glasses from the kitchen. Vidkun merely sat down and began unwrapping his sandwich, while Abigale shouted through the house.

Abigale: “Verde, Urabe, food’s here!”

Verde: “Just a minute, Sweetie.”

Approximately 15 seconds later, Verde and Urabe both showed up, looking as they normally did. Verde Dusk stood tall at 181 centimeters, had a skinny frame with slimmer features, with her best asset easily being her face. Her form was quite modest for a god, yet it was accentuated with an ambiguously tan complexion and a pair of violet eyes. Her black hair went just past her shoulders, and was dressed simply in her signature green top, this time a simple T-shirt, and a black skirt. Why she chose to look like this was a good question, but those who knew the truth knew that this form hit close to home for her.

Yuki Urabe Dusk was positively petite at only 159 centimeters, and nothing about her physique seemed intimidating. A fair complexion born from French and Japanese heritages, mostly Japanese. Poofy black hair that went down to her shoulders, bright blue eyes, and an overall skinny build, similar to Verde’s, but with more substantial “assets.” Everything about her said she was an unassuming woman, right down to her choice to wear a blue and white striped tie-dye dress.

Urabe: “More Pita Inn?”

Verde: “It’s filling, healthy, and there are two people in this world: People who like Mediterranean food and people who have never had good Mediterranean food.”

Abigale: “Don’t worry, I made sure to get something different for you. Some baba ghanoush and their salmon salad.”

Urabe: “Aw, thanks Honey. And you know I don’t mind, Verde. I’m just surprised that you guys don’t want more variety.”

Vidkun: “Comfort foods are comfort foods because they’re safe and familiar.”

Vidkun said before he took a mighty bite of his falafel sandwich, digging his teeth through the tomatoes and ground chickpeas like he was in an eating contest.

Verde: “Nice to see you’ve got the ‘eating like a dude’ thing down pat. So how’s the guy’s life treating you?”

Vidkun: “Showers only take five minutes now, so that saves time. Shaving every morning’s kind of a drag. And since my parents are off… wherever, I haven’t really had to deal with the social ramifications of this reality change.”

Urabe: “Well, that’s a boring answer.”

Zoe: “Not to be rude, but Vidkun has never led the most outgoing life.”

Vidkun: “Yeah, yeah, and now I’ve been even more of a homebody with this research project. We’re the first people ever—”

Verde: “Wrong. First in this universe.”

Faced with Verde’s smugness, Vidkun merely rolled his eyes, refusing to let her have this win.

Vidkun: “…We’re the first people to ever switch bodies like this, to swap our sexes around, so I feel an obligation to analyze this. What it’s like, what it means. I know any humanities major worth their weight in gravel would be jumping at the opportunity to explore something like this, so… we’ve got to do it.”

Abigale: “I admire your determination, but how much progress have you made?”

Zoe: “We have accumulated tens of thousands of words of notes over the past three weeks we’ve been working on this project. Unfortunately, we are struggling to figure out what, exactly, we are doing. We lack a firm thesis or clear structure. We have more anecdotes and stories than we know what to do with, and are struggling to focus.”

Urabe: “You’re both smart men, but you’re also not scientists or trained researchers. And you are both looking for a hypothesis, a clear if-then statement, when you are simply in the observation stage. You must collect your data, analyze it, and only then can you begin working on an outline.”

Vidkun: “I know that. The problem is that we cannot even find a good way to collect our data.”

Urabe: “Oh, that is your issue? Very well. As we speak, I am uploading a comprehensive dataset on your activities for the month of June into your Google Drive account. A standard spreadsheet is a bit too restrictive for data this robust and—”

Vidkun: “Are you kidding me? You just had this data on standby? Why didn’t you tell us?”

Urabe: “You two were determined to work on this project on your own. If you wanted my assistance, you should have asked.”

Vidkun’s pale, freckled face was red as a tomato as Urabe said that, looking like he was about ready to burst in front of her, only for Verde to chime in to defuse the tension.

Verde: “I think what Urabe actually meant is that she wanted to be careful with the data we distribute and allow to exist on the internet. Plus, if you do want to get this published, you are going to need to explain your process in stupid amounts of detail, and lie to get it published. Nature is not going to let y’all blow the door off by announcing that body swapping is real and makes you gay.

Zoe: “We actually were exploring that angle, and how the ability to alter one’s sense of self, the ability to occupy another body, changes one’s sexual preferences.”

Abigale: “Whatever you two plan on doing, or want to do, know that you have our full support. It takes months to write a good paper, and I think I know how to publish it in a fairly renown Chicago journal. Just remember that this is your side project. We want you to go out there and experience life, not ponder what life is and can be while you sit in front of a computer.”

A cold chill ran through every room in Casa del Dusk after Abigale said that, but it passed as soon as it came.

With a sigh, Vidkun hung his head, dejected but knowing that the women around him were right. He and Zoe continued to finish their falafel sandwiches before grabbing some other dishes from the bag to munch on. Some mujadara for Zoe, as lentils and rice with caramelized onions was a simple yet filling side, while Vidkun opened up a cucumber yogurt salad.

Vidkun: “This is also more like a pilot study in terms of scale. I want to make big sweeping statements, but we cannot really do that unless we get hundreds of people involved in something.”

Urabe: “At least you’re mature enough to realize that.”

Vidkun: “Do people my age really not know that’s how it works?”

Abigale: “You’d be surprised how sheltered college freshmen can be.”

Zoe: “Hmm… it’s amazing how little time I’ve spent thinking about college this summer…”

Verde: “Eh, that’s for the best. College is not what you were gassed up to expect it to be, and it’s got nothing on a high-powered doohickey of divine intervention.”

Vidkun: “Still, I feel that I need to be analyzing this somehow, need to be—”

Verde: “Then keep a diary, ya dork. Read through it later and see how your thoughts shifted over time. That’s basically what I was going for with the Posse Logs.”

Zoe: “About that. I believe we were a bit too frazzled to get a straight answer, but what happened to the Posse Logs?”

Verde: “Eh, they went offline for a day thanks to some bullshit I couldn’t figure out. I think it might have something to do with the Kuro Abigale Quinlans we invited for our June 14th celebration…”

Urabe: “The Posse Logs were a hastily crafted attempt to log your thoughts at the end of each day, but I always intended to replace them with a superior, less intrusive, system, which I rolled out on June 28th. It is continuing to log your thoughts, you just don’t recall it.”

Vidkun: “…That sounds like an invasion of privacy—”

Verde: “I can literally say some magic words and read your mind. Privacy’s a fallacy, homie!”

Verde punctuated her sentence by smashing her teeth into a large chunk of chicken. Vidkun and Zoe stared at each other for a moment, silently acknowledging the chaos inherent to their daily existence, before each grabbing a spare falafel and dipping it in tahini sauce. It was better to not think about the fact that not even their thoughts were safe from the all seeing Gods before them.

Abigale: “So, with your research on hold for the time being, what do you two plan on doing next week? Jade and Caroline are going on their trip. Maxxie is going on a secret trip arranged by Verde. And Haruki is bringing a few people with her on a road trip to Mexico.”

Vidkun: “If vacation mandatory or something?”

Verde: “Nope, but fooling around is!”

Vidkun: “Ah. I guess that settles it then. I’m heading to Mexico with Haruki. Normally, I wouldn’t go, but Gem wanted to go, Babs wants to see her family’s home country, and Tony wanted to try leaving the country. I could just hang around here, without my boyfriend, but that sounded pretty lonely.”

Urabe: “Considering how much of a homebody you are, that’s a surprise. You know we won’t just teleport you home or anything, right?”

Vidkun: “Duly noted. I probably won’t like it, but at least I’ll be able to say I gave it a shot.”

Zoe: “I would like to travel out of the country for once, but doing so on my own and away from my family would not sit well with me. It frustrates me how Nazz and my father immediately went to work for Flare Industries after being transformed and resurrected. Based on how Natasha was, based on how she always talked about my father, I doubt either of them would take a vacation unless they were forced to.”

Verde: “Oh? I can do that! …I’m not gonna, but I could!”

Once again, the two men in attendance looked at each other and sighed, knowing this was their life, and they just had to accept this nonsense.

Zoe: “…So, would you care to spoil what you’re planning on doing with Maxxie?”

Verde: “Nope! But I do want her to get the chance to hang out with her parents before she leaves.”

Vidkun: “Weren’t they supposed to come back yesterday? Or was it today?”

Abigale: “They have encountered difficulties while in Japan, and are working to make things right.”

Vidkun:Wow. That has to be the least ominous thing I’ve heard all day.”

With that snarky comment, Vidkun polished off one more falafel and got up from his chair.

Vidkun: “I take it we can spend the night here head of your ‘Fourth of July Swap Fiesta Bash.'”

Verde: “It’s an open invitation, Vid. You’ve swapped here, you’ve fucked here, and you can sleep here. No problem, no shade.”

Vidkun: “Then I think I’ll turn in early if that’s alright. …And Verde, thank you. For everything.”

Verde: “Ah, I see he acknowledges that I am a benevolent goddess. …But in all seriousness, I’m happy to help. I like ya, squirt, and you’ve been adding a potent spice to this summer of fun.”

Vidkun: “That has to be the first time someone described me as spicy… And I’m sorry if I am being a bit difficult.”

Urabe: “It’s not surprising. You just changed your history, your life, and are coming to terms with the fact that this, that all this, is just you.”

After letting those words swirl in his mind, Vidkun smiled and nodded before grabbing his laptop and heading upstairs to get ready for the night. This left only the three Gods and Zoe, with a table full of restaurant wrappings and small spills of sauces, all food fully consumed. Zoe diligently grabbed the wrappings together and wiped the counter with a napkin. Not because anybody asked him, but because he felt like it.

Zoe: “Thank you for the meal. I’m sure that the Xing, Kurokawa, and Flare family can find some way to keep the next week ‘entertaining’ for you.”

Abigale: “We’re sure that you will. Though, Verde might need to give you an assignment if others are not as willing.”

When presented with a response like that, Zoe was left without a clear out, so he merely shrugged and departed, staring briefly at the three as he wondered what the hell they could have planned for tomorrow.
