Nari’s Log Cycle 006: The Endless Barrel of Exposition

The darkness seemed to last longer than before, likely due to how I succeeded in preventing this place from going down the pooper. But the important thing was that I was back in my prior form, and now, now I would get all the answers I desired, and then some. At least I got to meet some others in addition to this utterly batty Red Panda. But onto my tale for this… Cycle, if it were.

Nigma Box’s Best and Worst of 2012 Awards

Well, it figures that after trying to do some sort of super awards thing for several months in order to lower my workload would end up making me realize that, A. I am not happy with 90% of my stuff that I wrote before Darksiders II.  And B, I reviewed tons of stuff within a year.  67 game reviews, several impressions, 21 Anime Reviews, a 12 part series of some truly bizarre fanfiction, and a failed attempt at looking back at every Kirby title.  But I have the urge to praise some of my favorite titles I reviewed, with my top and bottom ten games, and top and bottom five anime reviews.  It’s unoriginal, but simple enough to do in two days!  Oh, and the ordering doesn’t follow the scores, because opinions change over time, and I have different standard for different products, alright?

KO Beast Cover

I’ve got to say, high expectations are a really horrible idea. Well, I guess that’s all I really need to say about this show. I originally bought it, since I couldn’t find high quality stuff online, even though there are now, and did not watch it, simply because I thought I should save it for a rainy day. Well, after watching Master of Martial Hearts, I felt like breaking in this series’ seven episodes. And, it was not worth the wait of nearly 18 months, I’ll tell you that.

Some might call me desensitized, and some might call me a fool. But either way, I think I did it. What was it? I dunno. Everything worked out well, or at least I hope it did. I normally have a good recollection of events, but here? Nu-uh. Yet, I can’t start anew until I tell you my story this time, as if I am talking to another lifeform. Hell, who’d even be observing these? The Doctor who is a talking Red Panda? I’d think he’d, yeah, I’m calling it a he, because I don’t know a gender-neutral term that flows as well, have better things to do. Seeing as how he was able to do all of this. But I am getting off-topic here.

I barely recall anything about where I was before I was in this “OMNI” place, but I think I’ve deduced that appearance was important over there. Part of me is grateful that I no longer am involved with such a place, but I know that is only to point out just how foolish they, and presumably myself as well, were. As someone who has been changing appearances all- Who am I kidding, I don’t have a sense of time any more! Short version, I found myself in the body of a child, with the objective to go to an area a few blocks away, and I had to wait there, sing, and get a bullet lodged into her head. Because that is a nice thing to do!

I never was one to believe in a divine entity. At least, I don’t think I was. My life was merely a sequence of events where I am confused, and merely die, with the third time obviously not being the charm that I would get my answers. Now? Now all I’ve got are more questions! Yet, I am getting ahead of myself. Where was I?

My skull felt like it was trapped in a vice grip, with one final twist being more than enough to burst my head like a plum tomato. I hardy recalled a single goddamn thing. Just that I woke up in some weird-ass garage, got into some clothes, got some food, biked to a city, and then… Its all blank. Oh, and I guess my name is Nari or something like that. I was some teenager with white hair and blue eyes. Emphasizing the past tense on the last bit, because I almost immediately noticed that was no longer the case.

The first memory that I can recall happened only a few hours ago, when I woke up. I had no idea who I was, where I was, why I was there, why I was there- you get the picture. Sure, I still knew about certain things, yet most of it seemed to be picked out in a seemingly random order. I knew about language, writing, and common elements in storytelling, but no characters or actual examples. I knew mathematics up to Trigonometry, basic level Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, yet my knowledge of history was mostly devoid of dates, or even names. Even then it was pretty barren, to the point where I could not even recall where I was from. Or perhaps that was just the fact that I had some form of amnesia?

Hello readers, if you are even bothering to look at this. After my attempt at an ongoing story with Intertoids, I foolishly believe myself to be ready to try and do something not unlike it, although with actual characters, and a plot that I thought of before writing. Well, more like a proper framework, seeing as how Intertoids was originally a one-off.

MOMHNote: I re-reviewed this anime in 2018. Please disregard this original review.

Disclaimer:  This post is contains images that are NSFW, because what it is a review of, is  also NSFW.  Why?  Because the show does not care, and why should I?

Now, I don’t know where this show came from, I just heard about it back when I was big into That Guy With The Glasses last summer, and watched through this thing after hearing that it was noisome. And there is no way to say this other than, yep, it is pretty much the worst show I have ever seen. If not the worst product of entertainment I’ve ever seen for sale, let alone get localized. But, explaining why it is bad will require a deeper deconstruction, meaning this review will be long. So enjoy your Christmas with this repugnant gift that keeps on giving!

Skip Beat HeaderPart of me feels inherently bad when I am unable to go through a 25 episode series within a week. Afterall, at most it would be a 8.5 hour long session that can be broken up by watching three episodes thrice, sandwiched in by sour sessions of four. I mean, I can spare up to three hours for a game, why should another medium be limited towards one or less? Maybe I just dislike marathoning stuff I like, because I didn’t want it to end. Or maybe it is just how I am dreading what I have to do next, and even the most mediocre stuff shines in comparison, let alone something I find to be wonderful.

The Last Story Review

the_last_story__elza_and_kanan_by_crimsonxcrime-d39jrz8

I really do hate it when I am not able to get content out regularly. Sure, I think that taking 13 days to beat a 42 hour game is understandable for someone who goes to high school, and needs to save an hour most days to work on something else. Either way, seeing as how my Wii ended up corrupting all of my Xenoblade data, all 90 hours of it, I decided I should unwrap this title, 3.5 months after I bought it. Yeah, I’m going to be working on that. Regardless, and without paying any mention to Operation Rainfall, or the creator’s whose names people know, my review of The Last Story.

It has been a while since I did one of these long winded Fairly Messy Rants, which is a title that I am debating, since it is more of a critique than a rant.  However, I don’t see a huge need to change the title, mostly because I dislike manipulating categories via this interface, and it encompasses my feelings whilst writing.  So let’s talk society, because I have no reviews on my posting backlog.  So have something I made a few months ago, and I am not so super fond of.

Despite getting frustrated by self-imposed handicaps, scheduling, and the fact I just don’t like proof reading my work more than once, I absolutely adore doing this. Not only do I feel accomplished when consuming media, but it helps me understand it a lot more, and what exactly make something good. In addition to working on a large backlog of media, while revisiting old favorites simply due to how I enjoyed them years ago when I first heard of them. And now I am, at least I hope, able to adequately explain why I like them. With ToraDora being one of the later, and I have to say, it holds up pretty darn well.

As I have stated before, I dislike multiplayer that has me directly connect to people online . Oh sure, I can have some couch co-op with a friend who only ever comes over once every two weeks to a month, which was the reason it took me 9 months to beat Rayman Origins. And at the same time, I dislike games, or any medium, when they focus on modern warfare. But, because I am a tad nutters, I wanted to see if Double Fine could make me give two scraps about the applicable subgenre. And, well, they tried at least.

Once in awhile, there comes a show that abolishes all expectations that I had for it. However, pretty much everyone who kept up with anime during 2011 probably already knows this, but hey, more exposure never really hurt anything if it is done by people who understand the product, and I think I do. Yes, this is a magical girl anime, and I can safely call it badass.

Adventure Time: Hey Ice King! Why’d You Steal Our Garbage?! Review

I’ll admit to being extremely cynical of this being a thing. I mean, WayForward, a developer who is very good at what they do, even if the end product can be a little light on content. Working on a game based on Adventure Time, one of my favorite shows of all time. With the subtitle of “Hey Ice King! Why’d You Steal Our Garbage?!” Sounded, at least to me, like it was something that could easily end up becoming something that was trying way too hard in being an “accurate” adaptation of the game. And I can safely say that is not the case by a long short.

Paper Mario: Sticker Star Review

You know, I didn’t even realize this until I was nearly done with this title, but Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door was pretty much the singular game that made me think of games as something more than things to mess around with. And as a child, made me fully consider them an artform. It was one of my favorite titles growing up. Hell, even before I knew what a fan fic was, I wrote one about that game. So I naturally had high expectations with this game, and suffice to say, it does not pass all of them.

Deus Ex Human Revolution Review

A part of me feels more than a little awkward for bringing up a game that is 15 months old, the right amount of time for the game to be forgotten, and not necessarily looked back on by most. However, part of the creation of this blog was to organize my thoughts on pretty much every game I currently own, something that I am bound to regret when I need to do some the lengthy RPGs I have lying around. But I had the DLC for this, and due to an odd decision plan, it was either this or Divinity II: The Dragon Knight Saga, a sixty hour game. So, not even acknowledging the original Deus Ex, here’s Deus Ex: Human Revolution, one of the more conflicting games I’ve played in recent memory.

Twelve-year-old me once said something along the lines of, “Don’t judge a book by its cover, judge it by the description on the back. If it sounds nifty, give it a whirl!” But with a plot synopsis, it is still easy for something to not result in being anything like you expected it. It happened with pretty much every drama review I made, and Oreimo, to a certain extent. Yet, is this a case where the dismissal of the premiss allows it to soar high and smile while boiling in space, or dig a whole to some magma and lose it’s flesh? If you’ve checked out my twitter account during October the 21st-25th, you probably know the answer. For everyone else, here’s a review.

Virtue’s Last Reward Review

Note: I re-reviewed this game in 2016. Please disregard this original review.

I will not attempt to hide the fact that I loved 999, or to give the game its revised title, Zero Escape Volume 1: 9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors. A title given because nobody had copies after the initial shipments, and they wanted to make it more immediately connected to its sequel. Either way, I absolutely adored the game despite the entry barrier being about eight feet tall and covered in spiders. However, I got to the land of tangential learning by mixing in scientific theories in with one of the my favorite stories I’ve heard in recent memory. That aside, it still got coo-coo up the nutters by the end, and had to be explained through a Q&A with a creator. So how does the sequel hold up, pretty damn well, but I have reasons after the jump!

I try to be open to pretty much everything. However, upon going through several iterations of what I refer to as “Youth Drama” animes, I have come out bored and upset that I watched that instead of trying to review something fun. Like a show about the Cthulhu mythos, reimagined with cute anime girls.  However, this week I am here to talk about Tari Tari, a show like, Natsuyuki Rendezvous, Moyashimon: Tales of Agriculture, and Angel Beats. Yes, I have shown myself to not be a very big fan of this subgenre. However, a show about people being happy might just be enough to get me out of this runt, hit the jump and find out.

My (Late) Thoughts on Pokemon Black 2

Pokemon is what got me into gaming. My four year old mind was attracted to reruns of the show as I spent my early years eating cereal in front of the tele, and when I hear there were games to add to my list of toys and trading cards, I jumped it… with Pokemon Stadium! And then a few years later I got a GBA and played the crap out of every version that I could get my hands on. And to this day, I still love the games, with Pokemon Conquest being one of my favorite titles of 2012. And as somebody who found Pokemon Black to be the his favorite Pokemon game, what do I think of Pokemon Black 2? Find out!

You know, I do not really like it when after playing a game for a few hours, I do not want to beat it and can’t even force myself into doing it.  I think my breaking point is not when a game is bad, but when the design just baffles me to the point where I can’t convince myself that the product can be redeemed.  A wise man once said that if something keeps getting worse, it will likely not pull a U-turn and go into something great.  Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning was one of the least simulating globs that I even feel ripped off for getting it for $40 at launch.  While Bayonetta was just not fun for me after 2 hours, and was going to be too repetitive if I tried to play it the proper way.

Aliens Infestation Review

I like WayForward, even though their games tend to be fairly hit or miss in my eyes.  And I enjoyed both Alien and Aliens, even though it has been years since I have seen them, due to how I only watch films quarterly, if that. I am the kind of guy who believes that something should not be judged completely based on its surface elements. However, those surface elements should accurately represent a product unless the point of a misleading surface element is for some kind of deconstruction, like with Spec Ops: The Line. So when I looked up information on this title, only to figure out that the titles of Oreimo is just an abbreviation of something that translates to, My Little Sister Can’t Be This Cute… A title that would make anyone a bit embarrassed if they brought it up to the register unless it is also a place that sells body pillows of middle schoolers. So let’s dive into something that can be of really any quality at this point. (more…)

Code of Princess Review

I always feel bad when someone talks about how a title is a spiritual successor to a beloved classic, when I do not know much of anything about the original title. Sure, I played the demo of Guardian Heroes, but I found it to be a bit too slow for a beat-em-up. However, I still preordered it. Why? Because Atlus is the kind of company who would rather understock than overstock, and it was $30 now, or $50 later. And it came with a CD and neat box, so that at least supplies the cushion. Yet, as someone who has little experience with anything like Code of Princess, what do I think of it? Well, let’s just say I’m a bit torn on the subject.

Bioshock 2 Review

I thought Bioshock was a very nice game, other than the save system that encouraged you to try and try again with no consequences for messing up other than a load screen. How it included revitalizing chambers in case you do not use the save system. The pointless morality system, and a crappy ending. So the sequel took into account to not improve most of those things, and just creating plot holes and a product that lacks was filled with one of the first big gaming controversies that I saw within the medium. But this is a place for my opinions, so let’s do it with Bioshock 2.

Comic Jumper: The Adventures of Captain Smiley Review

After the surprising popularity of ‘‘Splosion Man, Twisted Pixel decided that the only logical follow up for two near dialog-less titles is to create a game that is trying to make you laugh more than anything. I only started watching this show for two reasons. One, it is called YuruYuri, and any show with the gall to call itself its own genre should be interesting enough to take a glance at.
