If this past week is any indication, I think one of the biggest issues that will permeate throughout gaming this upcoming generation is the matter of games distribution. This was originally a fairly simple concept, but with digital distribution growing in popularity, many game companies have been looking for ways to have the means of distribution better serve them by creating their own platforms or signing exclusivity deals in order to lessen the risk associated with launching any kind of product. While this sort of thing typically results in the establishment of a diverse and competitive marketplace that ultimately benefits the consumer in the long run, in the short run it creates a very hectic environment where the consumer is put in a place of uncertainty and inconvenience as they need to choose what platform they’re going to invest their time and money into.

If it is not obvious by now, while I do portray and present myself as a calm and rational member of society who wishes to help and assist others whenever possible, I actually consider myself to be something of a degenerate. I adore things that I genuinely know “normal people” who view as unacceptable, and while I know well enough to keep these things out of regular conversation, I just cannot help myself and get genuinely giddy when I find something incredibly messed up. Whether it be a story about murderous trans-dimensional flesh monsters, a show wherein a woman is forced to eat an omelet filled with feces, poop, and semen, or this awful censored header image, which you can find by digging through the archives on ONAT’s Patreon.

Good news everyone! After two years of me dragging my feet, I finally finished my latest novel, Psycho Bullet Festival: The Odyssey of Abigale Quinlan, and it will be out on April 27th for your reading pleasure. It’s been a rough road getting this thing to completion, but I managed to pull through to the end, and it wound up being my largest novel to date as well. I just hope that some people actually, you know, read this novel. If no, then I may need to look into alternative distribution methods for my works… and commission some covers.

…The Hero is Defeated timeline in the Legend of Zelda annoys me. I understand the need for a timeline where Ganondorf ran free only to eventually be sealed by the seven sages without the help of Link, but there is an easier way to reach that conclusion. They could follow the rule of time travel that, whenever something foreign enters a new timeline, it causes that timeline to split off and allows for a new timeline to be created. So when Link travels to the future, he could end up splitting the timeline just by arriving there. So in A Link to the Past, the hero could have just never arrived. (more…)
Some people are excited about Fallout 4 coming out in a manner of days, but I am waiting until 2017 or so to play it, as I would rather enjoy a complete game with mods applied rather than a buggy game at launch. At the moment, one of my most anticipated game was just released this morning, Student Transfer. Student Transfer is a body swapping and transformation focused game that is made by the fans of Press-Switch, an unfinished title I praised in the past for being something of a dream game of mine, and I plan on reviewing come the next release. I would have already started playing it, but there are a few bugs that are being worked out at the moment, and I am only at chapter 6 in Neptunia Re;Birth3. Regardless, expect a post about Student Transfer, a game I could help create if I so wish to, but I don’t do well with group projects for the most part, and I want full ownership of everything I do. So, I didn’t pay much attention to it after its launch, it’s flaccid whimpering launch, but it was pretty obvious to everybody that something bad happened in the Bundie offices when this turkey was being baked. So Kotaku, a site I visit so seldomly I do not know what the front page looks like, did a neat little piece on the development of the Destiny: Part 1 or Dest1ny if you are somebody who found out about 1337-speak in 2007, and still thinks it’s kinda cool… (more…)
So, the Trans-Pacific Publishing trade agreement is a big thing this week, and it may affect all media in Japan, Australia, the United States, Canada, and more. It will increase the already overpowered corporations’ power, is vaguely written, and will exacerbate the problems with copyright laws, laws that have been mangled and mutilated over the past few decades. You could be deemed a criminal for having the audacity to leak information that the public ought to know about, even if it’s something as simple as a game being technically broken upon release. Tampering with software files would be illegal, from removing DRM, to fixing games, and potentially even mods, which would be viewed as hacking. Piracy could be met with the destruction of your hardware and neigh unlimited fines, and this whole thing was written by corporations for it, so why in the fuck would any true human being support that shit? Seriously, the fact this democratic government would so much as consider this sort of putrid pulsating piece of poo for a second is disgusting. (more…)
I should probably bring up how Tony Hawk Pro Skater 5 is quite the turd of a game from what I can tell. With a Metacritic of 36 on the PS4 and a… 48 on XBO? I thought that the XBO version wouldn’t work for some people because the game is so terribly made and needs a patch bigger than the game itself to, presumably, even run. Bad framerate, textures, physics, and general game feel all make it a title that will likely just be an ash can project made to renew a license that Activision probably only spent a few million making and shat out the door six months too early… Not that I really care about the series though, I just like the soundtracks of the first four games and that’s it. Sorry no review his this past week. I didn’t really play anything the week before that, and am currently working my way towards Undertale, which is pretty darn fantastic and is probably going to be my favorite game of 2015. Heck, I’d say it’s a ten on ten if there was an easy mode, because I am really not good at games that focus on avoiding things that move in odd patterns or give you a limited reaction time. But I’ll save that for the review. For now, enjoy this page of shoddily constructed game news that I gathered, in contrast to the TGS rundown of last week. (more…)
So some Japanese company made an Oculus Rift game where you fuck a balloon in a schoolgirl uniform to simulate sex. Yeah. That’s honestly perfectly fine in my book. I’d rather have pronography be very clearly labeled as such while having next to no artistic merit, and simply be shameless in fulfilling the sexual urges of humans. It’s better than any eroge that dares to have any artistic value, as it is being made for masturbatiory purposes. I’d much rather have sex scenes in visual novels that you can censor if you enter a code, so it is clear you are playing it for the story… Yeah, this is a complicated issue I should not be addressing in the opening like this. Another week, another one-fifth-second of a year gone down the drain, and another series of days where I feel like I have been a worthless POS, as I am not keeping my shit organized well enough. I’ll hopefully get better once I return to a school based schedule this week, and hopefully my first semester of full-time college does not cause me to dive down the despair drenched drain to the dirty and dingy darkness. Alliteration is fun… (more…)
After seventeen years in the making, not really but it felt like it, I am finally done with Verde’s Doohickey, my novel for 2015, although I may put another one out on Christmas of New Years. Depends on how quickly I can write this far simpler story and how easily the dynamic between the two main characters flows, because I have been struggling to get the everyman and asshole dynamic right for years… Man, it’s only been a day and I’m already talking about my next thing. So, Comiket 88 was held in Japan this week, the week of Gamescom, and it naturally had a very spiffy showcase of Doujin games, some very meh looking, others on par with content the lower to mid tier Japanese developers put out. However, I will not be able to play most of them because the world is still greatly divided by languages, when this shit should have been figured out years ago. I’m not saying that English should be the default for the world, as English is a pretty poor language in my book, but I feel that everybody in a developed part of the world should be able to speak a global language as a second language, while most media would be produced in that language to maximize the audience size, and slowly weed out old languages. Now, some people say that a wide variety of languages helps encourage differences in the world and allow people to think differently. I say that while there may be some truth there, some things need to be sacrificed in order for the world to progress and become more understanding. I mean, it could actually help global understanding of others quite a bit if you design the language properly and based on the pros and cons of other languages. (more…)
I know that it would be really hard, and the framerate would constantly plummet to 20 fps if one is lucky, but I really want to see a game where you can destroy all the buildings in it. Sure, there was Red Faction Guerrilla, but I want something like that set in a big modern city, as I get bored seeing the same darn sights when commuting every week and want there to be a game where you can cause collateral damage to millions and cost the city trillions as you destroy national monuments for the lolz. Instead the closest thing to what I want is No Man’s Sky, but I’m pretty sure the space cops will kill you if you try to dig a hole through the other side of the planet just to see how the game handles this. In my dumb brain, companies like Idea Factory International, NIS America, Atlus, Aksys, XSEED, Sekai Project, MangaGamer, JAST USA, Carpe Fulgar, and anybody I’m forgetting all work in the same building located somewhere in California. The building is based off of the one blueprint that was used to build every high school in Japan circa 1950, and it is a complete mess. With random unlocalized games everywhere, old bootleg VHS tapes of “the hottest Japanimation”, a locker full of PSPs, this one incredibly disturbing classroom filled with full scale figures and body pillows, and dirty laundry that piles up every week until Jimmy clean up their blankets and graphic tees over the weekend. Then there’s Nana, who is just sad after spending three thousand hours a year playing everything this company produces, and is flat out disgusted by the tropes at this point. (more…)
…I’m just really pissed at myself for so much. I know, I poke fun at myself for being kinda shit time and time again, but lately it’s been getting worse and worse and I don’t have anybody who I feel I can share any of this shit with. It’s a pretty sad state of affairs that I thought I had conquered years ago, but I have not, and I truly do not think I will be able to get my shit together… at any point in my life. So, yeah, video games. (more…)
I was going to make a post on NeoGaf about how I spent about 1.5k on games over the past two years, but ended up getting nearly 300 games in the end. However, I chickened out and could not bare to put my thoughts on a message board, because that is a great way to get murdered. I also bought a Chromebook so I could type things instead of sleeping while on the train, and am looking into buying some hormones because I should start HRT sooner than later. It won’t be a full gender transition or anything like that, as I think I’d be the most comfortable being Genderqueer. (more…)
Yeah, yeah, reviews are coming, Verde’s Doohickey will be out in 2015, I’ll start watching another anime soon, school is ending so I’m a bit busy, etc. I forgot to do this introduction until I was about to hit post, so… here you go, Guyvers. (more…)
I… I had very high hopes and extreme fears when this game was coming out, and when I picked it up a while ago. I am not good at character action games by any means, but was so taken in by the soundtrack that I felt I had to go through the game… which I did one and a half times. Still, saying I cleared, or beat the game would be a lie, as I only got through it on the super easy mode, and after repeating two encounters for two hours, each, I hit my limit and ceased my proper playthrough. I was half joking when I tweeted out “Likes: Metal Gear Rising Revengeance. Dislikes: Playing Metal Gear Rising Revengeance.” But no, that was far more accurate than I intended and… Let me explain this relationship properly. (more…)
Wooh! E3 is just around the corner with its disgruntled face, and without commenting on the truckload of rumors about the blasted event that will undoubtedly disappoint and tire many a man , things obviously happened to get everybody revved up for the information I will undoubtedly try to summarize in one really, really, really long post. At least for June tenth and eleventh. (more…)
There are times when a game falls flat on expectations. When a game that is a personal favorite of many people you admire turns out to be something you just can’t get into. And times when it effectively kills your interest in the series it belongs to. But not Snake Eater, because it is my favorite Metal Gear Solid game thus far.
As stated prior, I apparently lived my life wrong to the point where I never ended up touching a PS2 or original Xbox controller, choosing a Gamecube because I could only get one, and I inherited a Nintendo 64. Which is a decent excuse for why I never played several titles, but no reason why I waited over a year until I opened up the Metal Gear Solid HD collection to continue my trek through the series. It is weird to own a game for four years, and not actually get around to beating it. But that is one of the unspoken goals of this blog, even if it is a series that has been talked about for the past decade and a half. And after finally sitting down and experiencing it, at least its oft dismissed remake, I can certainly see why people were so attached.
