Rundown Preamble Ramble:
Cerulean Waves and Murky Tides
This past week was home to the midterms here in the certifiably nasty United States of America, and the preface to them was looking pretty rocky. Despite the billionaire elite Epstein Class pumping an obscene amount of money into this election, it was looking like the stranglehold the Trump party claimed on America was coming to a much appreciated end.
I voted two weeks ago, did my part, filled out all of my ballot, and ignored the results until Tuesday night, when the Democratic Party had firmly taken the two pillars of the Legislative branch of the United States. For my international readers, that’s the Senate and House of Representatives, broadly lumped together as Congress. Congress is supposed to write the laws, pass the budget, but with the former overwhelming control by Trump’s Republican, aka Grand Old Party or GOP. Trump’s party has largely been obeying his orders for the past two years. But now? It looks like Congress might actually do something about the blatantly corrupt and illegal actions of this geriatric, malicious, and rapidly decomposing fuckwit.
Democrats have taken control of the Senate with 54 of 100 seats, and of the House with 254 of 435 seats. Even the Governors of the states, who lack direct power in Federal elections, swung blue (Democrats are the blue team), with 28 of the 50 states electing a Democratic governor. This represents a firm majority control over Congress, and sees the influx of a lot of new blood into the Democratic Party. First time “young” politicians have been elected, many members of the geriatric old guard have either DIED or bowed out of this round, and many of those elected have led campaigns with clear identifiable promises. They weren’t just selling vibes, blind patriotism, but a punch list of “shit Imma gonna do, b’lie dat!”
This is an unabashedly good thing, a sign of harm reduction at the very least, and a well-earned victory worth celebrating. We have seen places that have been deep red for decades elect Democrats, and the results herald a beginning of the end for Trump’s reign of terror upon the world, and this country. The powerful should be scared, as they no longer have a literal and figurative get out of jail free card, but this is not remotely close to the end of the bad times here in America. In part because… the Democrats suck too.
Throughout my paltry few years of life, I have learned to view the Democrats as the right wing party in any sensible political spectrum, and in the ensuing decades, they have only drifted rightward. For as comforting as the Obama, Biden— shit, even Clinton administrations seem, they were deeply flawed times. All the evils of the American Empire were still being practiced and permitted. Despite lip-service to minority groups and some propping up, the class structure of this country was maintained with a firm grip. And the exoneration of business, capital, and the war machine were evident, only limited by some loose approximation of good sense.
I view the Democrats, as a collective, to be an obvious lesser of two evils, but evil nevertheless, with the exceptions being just that— exceptions. Many who talked the talk will not pull a Zohran Mamdani and walk the walk with sensible government policies. Others will seek out ways to exploit, endanger, and push the various underclasses of this country down, voicing concerns about The Children, corrupting faggots, and provocateurs of ideological evil, i.e., communism anything left of center. I have been routinely let down by this collective before, and I anticipate a similar level of betrayal, especially given how lethargic the party has been over the past two years.
Those who silently protest against fascism by holding up signs or writing stern letters are no better than exterminators who leave cheese for rats. And two of the limpest dicks of this bird, Hakeem Jeffries and Chuck Schumer, are still afforded leadership roles until further notice. Or, perhaps misleadership roles is a more apt description. The best thing I can say about the leader of the Democratic Party and the institutions they now control is that… they at least will be better than what we’ve been living through for the past two years.
Or, to paraphrase my beloved Malcolm X, this is not healing, this is the knife being yanked out of America’s back. And any actual healing will be a long, arduous, and strifeful process. The past decade has shown anybody with eyes how easily rights can be stripped away, norms can be crushed, and overt fascism can become a mainstream and popular ideology. You cannot take anything for granted, or else the powerful will seek to blow it the fuck up.
Also… Americans, taken as a collective, are a bunch of short-sighted, selfish little buggers.
The way I see it, Trump and his peons did not lose because he did insane crimes on the reg, because he is an all but confirmed pedophile, because he has destroyed countless jobs, crippled institutions, or did lasting damage to American relations worldwide. If you wanted to install an agent to destroy America from within, you would basically do everything Donald Trump has done, just more competently. Yes, even the ballroom, and the wet landing strip to Washington’s Johnson, those are excellent distraction.
I wouldn’t even say they lost because of ICE or the deportation of god knows how many nameless people sent to wherever, or the children currently stewing in concentration camps. And the billions that Trump has enriched himself with? The median voter would probably call that a good thing, with how fucked their politics are after decades of idiotically brilliant propaganda campaigns and the successful national radicalization event of 9/11.
The Republicans lost because of gas prices, because Trump threw America back into ANOTHER war with the Middle East, because influencers like Tucker Carlson and Candice Owen turned on the American-Israeli Palestine Eradication Project. The tariffs raised the cost of living for the average person by a material percentage. Corporations are more brazen about layoffs and fucking the common worker more than ever. And the lax policing of corporations has enabled the mother of all component crises. Trouble came knocking at their home, and the uneducated masses could FEEL the effects of their voting habits DIRECTLY.
The new class of Democrat candidates talked a good game, but their great turnaround was earned by the sheer systemic incompetence of their opponents. …Also Black women, who are truly the beating heart of basically every positive change in America. If you disagree, stop reading my website. …And Democratic establishment turned against trans people. They viewed us as expendable and bad marketing, opening the door to Democratic strongholds like Colorado, Arizona, and Washington all successfully passed measures to prohibit transgender students from participating in school sports.
…Which will be extrapolated to all manner of locker room and/or bathroom segregation based on the “merits” of “birth sex.” Just because they are blue does not mean they are our allies. Hating trans people is one of the unfortunately popular opinions here in America, and we should expect only betrayal. I’m tempted to say “it’s just school sports” but it’s never one thing with these deplorable, ignorant, vibes-based, explain-it-to-me-like-I’m-a-[REDACTED] bigots. Shit, I hate sports so much that I would have been THRILLED if I got a pass out of it in school for being queer.
Akumako: “You were still in your egg era back in high school, ya fussy bitch!”
But this was never about fairness, it’s about putting legal discrimination ON THE BOOKS to manufacture consent, precedent, for the continued oppression of a minority. The POINT is to prevent people from having the comfort to deviate from norms and express agency over their own lives and bodies. MOST AMERICANS do not want trans people in public life, period. And most American parents would rather dead cis kid than a happy trans kid. It’s simply easier for them to “deal with.”
…Actually, that’s prolly giving them too much credit. They would probably rather watch their cis kid get raped to death— erotically lynched— live on steam, than need to “deal with” having a trans kid. AT LEAST 51% of American adults are in that camp, for sure. Primo defo. Absolutely!
I am being deeply cynical here— yet, as I said above, these election results were great. This the best outcome we could hope for. I just don’t want people getting too hopeful, as this is likely going to be a slowdown, a claw back, and if systemic reform is even possible, it is still many, many years away.
No foolin’, I will be spending the rest of my life seeing America either trying to get its shit together or relapsing into more overt fascism. But at least something was done before The Fascist Dream had been achieved, 100%. And hopefully— hopefully— the inevitable death of this vile wannabe dictator will cleanse the culture of this country in ways we can scarcely imagine. Because when someone dies, the young do not mourn, they meme, and the youngs shall inherit the Earth someday.
We have won the battle, but the war for justice will persist even after all is dead.
Persona 1 Remake Leaked
(Sure, Why Not Remake The Classic Trilogy?)
Well, this was talk of the town on Halloween, but I am perpetually late to the party as a provider of a weekly segment. From the deft hands of leakers, we have received a two-minute clip of what appears to be a remake of Persona 1 (1996), aka Shin Megami Tensei: Persona, or Revelations: Persona. The gameplay looks remarkably similar to the recent Persona titles in particular, and Atlus’s output broadly. Though, with its own take on a turn order system, relying on a turn order list that can be delayed by exploiting weaknesses, as is the modern JRPG way. It’s also clearly early, with unfinished assets, placeholder art, and assets/animations lifted from games like Persona 3 Reload.
Upon its reveal, there was speculation about its legitimacy. After all, nowadays anybody with enough Claude bucks can make some surface-level appealing slop that mimics a game they like, this footage uses a damn Persona 2 character, and the whole thing is in 360p. However, this would be incredibly high effort for such a fruitless endeavor— where’s the grift? Plus, it has such a defined look to it that I would hazard that this is more than just a pitch, and is closer to a progress showing for management and, perhaps, outside investors. AI can do horrifying things, but ape a style this pronounced? Doubt!
A Persona 1 remake also makes sense when broadly viewing production timelines, team capacity, and what Atlus, as a company, would want to prioritize. Let me just jot down a few reasons why:
- Atlus is the rare sub-500 staff studio capable of working on 4 or more significant projects at a time, and we don’t know what they’re going after Persona 6.
- It has been a few years since titles like Soul Hackers 2 and Metaphor, meaning Atlus staff would have been freed up to work on more projects.
- Persona is big, especially after the pandemic, ensuing anime boom and Persona 5 Royal was freed from PlayStation jail. Sega would want Atlus to prioritize new Persona games to capitalize on its fervent audience.
- Making a new game from scratch is scary, while remaking a game that many know by basis of reputation over any direct experience is a fairly safe approach. Plus, with the modern Persona mold well established, with Persona remakes well established, it is relatively easy for a team to adapt what has been done onto an older title.
- By relatively easy, I really mean you can spend less time on lengthy pre-production and prototyping— finding the right vibe and character— and can outsource more to cheap SEA (Southeast Asian) studios. …Or workhorse studios like Tose, the 21st greatest game developer of all time.
Akumako: “I asked where Natalie got that number from. She just handed me a list of Tose’s projects.”
Overall, I am quite interested to see this project happen, as Persona 1, and the Persona 2 duology, have been odd hangers-on that have only looked odder through the passage of time. Because, reductively, they are not Persona.
One of the more curious things that happens with several “legacy” gaming series established in the 20th Century is that, as the decade go on, the series deviates from what it was originally known for. Sometimes this could be with a game that cleans up rough ideas of the original into something more poignant or polished, such as with the jump from the first two Metroids to Super Metroid. Having played them all, I couldn’t really blame anyone for wanting to start at 3. You could say the same thing about the first two (three iffin’ youse a dip) Metal Gear games, though that at least has the mantle of Metal Gear Solid to cleanly delineate the eras.
The Persona series is one of the more interesting examples of this trend. The games are bigger now than ever, as they are playable anime RPG swith a more tangible contemporary setting familiar to all modern teens. Japanese high school! However, the series was originally a fairly standard entry in the Shin Megami Tensei series. Across Shin Megami Tensei I, II, If…, Devil Summoner, and Devil Summoner: Soul Hacker— all of which came out within five years— the series had a pretty defined identity.
You’re a guy with a female companion who fights and recruits demons in a cyberpunk or post-apocalyptic in the telltale format of the blobber. Which, for those in the back, just means a tile-based first-person dungeon crawler where you move around as a blob of party members. It’s pretty much the original format for RPGs. Yet, it has been relegated to its own dungeon RPG delineation, or dungeon crawler. Which itself is generally not seen as the most attractive due to the way the world is rendered as artificial tiles in an “immersive” first-person perspective and the inherent liminality to its map design.
…Grief, someone is going to try to make a Backrooms game and just make a blobber by accident, aren’t they?
It was in this murky mesh of influence where Atlus decided to experiment with another entry, inspired by the success of Shin Megami Tensei If… (1994) and its school setting. This would take the form of what’s commonly shortened to Persona 1. However, rather than just mirror the standard gameplay and flow of the rest of the SMT series, it changed quite a few things. The moon cycles, demon negotiations, and blobber-based exploring were all retained. Though, rather than have you control a variable sized party of humans and demons, all party members were humans— schoolmates— who could harness the power of demons on their own as personas. Sounds familiar! Yet rather than relegating this feature to the special protagonist of many faces, everybody could mix and match personas to your liking, giving the player a large amount of customization.
…Oh, and you could USE CHARCTER SPECIFIC ACTIONS as part of demon negotiations! So you could have characters taunt, stare, dance, sing, brag, bribe, pontificate, bully, scold, cold shoulder, condescend, or sarcasm them! Yes, sarcasm is a verb in this game! I love it!
So, what’s the catch? Well, the first is the gameplay. The title attempted to loosely blend together the language of standard RPGs and strategy RPGs by letting you position where your party members are in battle, but the execution was not very refined. Battlefields are narrow, tiny, and you don’t have the same versatility of placement as you would in a standard tactical game, even of the era. It’s just kind of there, not really taken advantage of. It’s slow and looks really plain. Like, this came out four months before Final Fantasy VII (1997), and I think it’s less interesting to look at than Final Fantasy IV (1991).
The second catch is the fact that this game just does not have most of the things that make Persona, post Persona 3, a remarkable series. The calendar system, social links, being an actual high schooler going to school every day, and the dual worlds systems, none of them are present here. Instead, you get a lot of random encounters throughout an environment that’s either an attempt at a 3D world, or a flashy PSP res map, with story segments slotted in between.
It’s not a bad game, it’s just something that is best approached as a 90s Shin Megami Tensei game, and it’s harder for a western audience to really appreciate it due to its weird release history. The American release of PS1 original was an infamously transformative localization, made in about three months. It removed all references to the game being set in Japan, blackfaced of Caucified characters to seem more American, cut a whole route for time, and made the game both easier and harder by increasing EXP yield but not money yield. Meaning you’re going to be scrounging for money while being overleveled with this game’s wack EXP curve. A strange problem to have.
The 2009 PSP release was given a far better localization, but lacked much of the hard personality of the original with UX changes and seems a lot more awkward, with teensy low res character portraits. However, the most glaring change is the introduction of new music that, while good, does not fit the more somber tone of the original. It’s like if you played Persona 5 music over Nocturne. It’s kind of cool, but you can tell that this was not the original vision.
Now, a simple re-release of the 2009 PSP version, with a music toggle, would be sufficient for most, and could be whipped up in a matter of weeks if Atlus really wanted it out pronto. (Just don’t pull a Persona 3 Portable and use bad Waifu2x on it. PLEASE!) However, that would not be a Persona game as it is understood in modern parlance, it would just be an old Shin Megami Tensei game getting a re-release. Sure, SMT is beloved and important, but it has never been a big seller. Such a venture, at $20 MSRP, would only sell… generously, 300,000 units in two years. Wrongfully ignoring sales, that $4.2 million sounds nice, but for a company like Atlus, and a $1 to $2 million budget, counting PR and marketing? Good return on investment, but peanuts in terms of cash flow.
Akumako: “It suddenly occurs to me that professional judgment is just vibes.”
So… yeah, it makes all the sense in the world for Atlus to remake the first Persona game in the mold of modern Persona, as the series’ current fanbase probably wouldn’t like the original. Hell, if it sells two million units, you may as well do the same for Persona 2 Part 1: Innocent Sin and Persona 2 Part 2: Eternal Punishment. …Which are WAY better games than the first Persona.
You have a fully 3D environment you can rotate as you see fit, which does wonders to make the world feel like a location, and not just some place. The negotiation system was expanded so you can do tag-team negotiations. And instead of using a bad perspective for battles, there is now a dynamic camera with far flashier effects. Hell, the characters can even EMOTE in P2! No wonder people dismiss the first game!
The Elder Scrolls VI Subtitle Announced
(How Does Bethesda Still Have Fans?)
So, for what passes as news nowadays— more like a desperate attempt at staying relevant— Microsoft and Bethesda have announced the subtitle for the much anticipated The Elder Scrolls VI. Most thought it was just going to be called Hammerfell, named after pertinent locations and races relevant to the more or less known setting. Yet, instead, it has a generic-ass fantasy name, The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel. Which… huh. It’s not a subtitle that could be abbreviated in shorthand the same way Daggerfall, Morrowind, Oblivion, or Skyrim have been. Just entering Sentinel on Steam produces over 400 results, pointing at the Wikipedia page should illustrate how this name could be confusing. But I guess Microsoft’s legal/marketing team is up for the challenge, or does not have a choice in the matter.
I would highlight how anemic of an announcement this is, but I can already feel myself going on a similar wasted potential scree as I did back in July. So I’ll try to keep this brief. Much of the frustration around the eternal wait for The Elder Scrolls VI has to do with the corporate design of Bethesda Game Studios. They want to be a three IP studio, but their tools have been outdated for a decade and a half, while their capacity has been capped in a way that’s deeply unusual for any games studio.
This is not for a lack of trying, as following the generational success of Skyrim, Bethesda embarked on an expansion, opening up offices in Texas and Montreal to facilitate larger scale development. They had 400 people by 2018, but were marred by a general lack of strong decisions from leadership, such as Todd “The Seagull” Howard, and the demands of running an unwanted and initially maligned live service with Fallout 76 (2018).
These two barriers prevented Bethesda from getting things done for about five years, with Starfield (2023) suffering obscene delays. The reception of this supposedly generation defining title was middling to put it mildly. They could have rebounded with the return to their standby IPs with a large pre-existing fandom, Elder Scrolls and Fallout, both of which had been starved of content at that point, yet they couldn’t. The demands of a modern AAA game have only grown, and despite being a larger studio than they were in 2018, with over 500 people, it seems that they simply cannot facilitate any meaningful dual development on multiple titles. A side team can work on expansions, as seen with Starfield’s expansions— the ones nobody has played— but they simply cannot work on two games at once, in what is likely a cash, culture, and management decision.
This comes at the cost of making it hard for people to actively engage with these IPs over a long period of time, as loyalty and investment is not rewarded with new releases. The days of getting regular, routine, sequels is evidently gone for many series, with even Super Mario taking a decade sabbatical between wholly new 3D adventures instead of six years, tops. Fans who grew up seeing Morrowind lead to Oblivion lead to Skyrim— within less than a decade— will ultimately need to wait a whole child’s lifetime to see Sentinels. So… what is the point in being emotionally invested in this series, in this studio? Because I don’t think there is any. And if you are loyal, what do you get? Finely refined experience? Or a game that is such a big wet open canvas that I’d imagine that any AAA studio with enough outsourcing could make it.
I don’t want Sentinel to come out and be a middling, forgettable, and blasé experience that leads Bethesda to shutter. …But I keep on feeling like that will be the story when the game releases in 2029 or 2030.
Saudi Arabia is Planning on Buying Unity
(If It Ain’t Open Source, Fuck Yo Software, fr, fr)
…OH COME THE FUCK ON!
You know, it’s bad enough knowing that Unreal Engine 6 is going to be an AI infested slop machine. Not because that’s what anybody wants, but because Tim Sweeney is a profound loser of a man who thinks he’s a big shot billionaire tech CEO, when he makes Musk and Zuckerberg look like titans of charisma. But now Unity— a company that has basically gutted everybody who was responsible for the profound violation of trust that was the runtime fiasco, might be acquired. By whom you may be asking? Why, by the greatest evil in modern gaming, the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund, controlled by the Saudi Arabian Royal Family, which is another way of saying Mohammed bin Salman.
As reported by Reuters, after having successfully acquired Electronic Arts, Saudi Arabia, with the help Jared “Trump’s-son-in-law” Kushner’s Silver Lake, are planning on buying Unity Technologies. While Unity has never been a profitable company— their financials are embarrassing— Unity is far in a way the most popular game engine in the world, and you simply do not want a bad government having unambiguous control over it.
The Saudis could make all sorts data collection mandatory and use it for whatever nefarious purposes they desire, or just sell it to the highest bidder. They could claim partial ownership of any game developed in this engine and/or implement something even worse than the runtime fiasco. Hell, they could just SABOTAGE the engine by making it less stable, less capable, to disrupt the market for their own gain. Buy your biggest rival and destroy them is a telltale business tactic after all! Regardless, the loss of a tool as foundational as Unity would be catastrophic to the industry, endanger studios, people who have been using this tool for 10+ years, and could risk the destruction of countless elements of game history.
Prior to this election, I would have written this off as an inevitable fact, even if the Saudis are running out of cash and Unity is just a money sink. After the midterms though? It IS possible that, with the increased anti-Trump pushback in the US government, this acquisition will stall or get rejected. Unfortunately, the chair of the FTC, which oversees acquisitions like this, is appointed by Trump himself. And, uh, even IF the machine was operating effectively, this probably would still get approved.
Even with Lina Khan— one of the good ones— heading the FTC, Microsoft got to acquire Activision Blizzard, which they are currently retooling into something salable as Microsoft wants OUT of the money sink that is video games? Yeah, that was under the Biden administration, so I’m going to say there is at least a 60% chance of this happening. And if it does? …Well, we are in for another wave of the industry crash we’re living through.
Most cool indies I can think of would respond by pivoting to Godot— pretty much THE open source game engine of choice for politically inclined indie devs. It’s been rising in popularity over the past two years, but it’s still a decade away from being able to match Unity in terms of capabilities or understanding. But it COULD get there, and it WILL if people band together!
If evil people are buying up everything good in this world, I’d rather see people put their efforts into something communally created, not for sale, and that exists to benefit everyone. It’s why I am such an open supporter of open source software, as I view it as THE best way to keep dollars in the hands of people and out of corporations. It’s why I use LibreWolf, Thunderbird, and Obsidian. (MusicBee and Paint.Net are freeware, which is not open source, but pretty close.)
While a part of me is absolutely fuming at this… I also realize that if something gets bad, gets just irredeemably shitty, people react, they retaliate, and demand something better, or MAKE something better. Again, the midterms, despite my cynicism, are just that. So, maybe part of me does want to see this, see things crumble down, because the collapse will hurt the people who ushered it— and a fuckload of other people. But, the future made from this wreckage, made from the creation of something new, could be far in a way better than what we have now.
…Gosh, I just believe in the idea that, “if we break everything, we can make it better than ever” as an ideology. Call it a sign of the times~!
Progress Report 2026-11-08
Let’s see, what can I end this on… Oh! Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is flirting with the idea of introducing a nonrefundable creative credit for Canadian artists. Basically, it frees an artist, musician, actor, or whatever the qualifier may be, from needing to pay tax on the first $45,000 CAD in income. Which… would be an absolute godsend for so many creatives. If you are making stuff in this current economy, you are putting in long hours for little pay, because you love the game of making things. Artists are what make life worth living in my mind, and any cause that will go to help artists is one that I will enthusiastically support.
Unfortunately, this just sent me down a mental rabbit hole of how bunk the tax system of America is, and I know that Canada’s is not that much better. The problem with the American tax system is how it is designed and written to benefit investors over workers. As I have said before, if someone works for themself, and net $30,000 in self-employed income, they would still need to pay over $5,000 in Federal taxes alone. However, some rich kid with a trust fund who gets $50,000 in long-term capital gains, $10,000 in US treasury interest income, and a rental property (bought by daddy) making a total of $10,000 a year (after depreciation) would owe… $864. Yep, this rich NEET could make more than TWICE as much as someone working from the sweat of their brow, but pay less than a FIFTH in taxes.
All of which is to say that… you gotta just break down the tax system, guys. It doesn’t work, it’s not fair, there’s too much bullshit added in over the years, and you GOTTA start taxing capital while laying off on the little guys. Otherwise, you will just perpetuate the rigid class system we are living in.
2026-11-01: Did another 4.5 hour studying binge, watched The Mummy (1999) and My Bride is a Mermaid with friends, then hunkered down and finished the first two segments of TSF Series #020, which was about 4,700 words. I still have the GROOVE! Not 5k words, but CLOSE!
2026-11-02: Short work day, no studying. Got 5,200 words into TSF Series #020, introducing more characters, starting the first real challenge, and trying to keep the prose contained.
2026-11-03: Spent WAY too long on the 600 word Bethesda bit. 3 hours of studying. Short work day. Only wrote about 750 words for TSF Series #020, as I got distracted by the election and wrote part of the preamble, 700 words, as I process things by writing about them.
2026-11-04: No work today! Polished off the preamble with 800 fresh words, getting the right cynical depressed tone. 4 hours of studying. I want to kill myself. Edited this Rundown. Cranked out 2,700 words for TSF Series #020, stopping part way through the first of four battle scenes. Got distracted by my toilet fill valve making a noise. My mother and I couldn’t fix it. Time to call Bob Johnson the Hot Tub King, he’s your man if you need anything. If you want that Jacuzzi installed, Bob’s the one you call!
2026-11-05: Full work day, two hours of studying, work after exercising, only eked out the 850 word Unity bit.
2026-11-06: Finished up this Rundown proofing the Unity bit, adding an endslate, did a STUPID amount of studying, as I am in CRAM mode.
2026-11-07: MORE CRAMMING! Final mock exam— I passed, yay— retaking two exams, reviewing 12,000 words of notes, and trying to stay sane while NOT working on TSF Series #020, as I just cannot focus on it while this is breathing down my neck.
