The Maria Mania route is a curious one. Originally written by Iwana and released as part of Version 4.0, the Maria Mania route was notable for its lack of any traditional transformations. No body swapping, sex inverting, cloning, possession, nothing! Instead, it was meant to be a mass school-wide event story where every female character gains the romantic knowledge of the promiscuous Maria.

It was always an oddball idea, that much is for certain, pushing what types of TF (Transformation Fantasy) Student Transfer could produce. Per the preamble included in the scenario, it was also part of an initiative by the dev team to create “short ends” that would introduce a concept and wrap it up in a day or two. A novel idea, but as the route was written, it became clear that the route could not be cleanly wrapped up in just two days, and the content was in a “purgatorial space between silliness and serious.” This made any continuation difficult, and per Iwana’s request, the route was relegated to a scenario. Going through it for the first time in seven years… I can see why it was abandoned, I hate to say.

Maria Mania begins as an offshoot of the long-dormant Zoey route where John decides to copy some of Maria’s memories in order to enhance her skills in approaching Kiyoshi. Because that’s the reason the two won’t get together. John sleuths around looking for Maria, muses over how exactly he should copy her memories, and after getting what he needs he bumps into Yui on the stairwell, grabbing her but dropping the device.

This leaves the device rattling, buttons unresponsive, and as Yui thanks John for saving her from a trip down the stairs, the device unleashes a blinding light that does seemingly nothing. Well, Yui seems a bit more flirtatious after being saved while Katrina is even more forward with John than she usually is, but John is too distraught after breaking the alien device two days in.

This makes up the middle of the scenario, where John reflects on how he had the power to change everything, yet did not even cheat on a darn math test with it. He wonders if he is just rationalizing to make himself feel better, or if he really is that boring that he would not have been able to do anything unique with the device. It’s a melancholic and introspective chapter where all of John’s actions have a good amount of weight behind them, and he is left struggling to even acknowledge his mistake. It’s a unique take on a “we broke the device” storyline. Nobody was left trapped in a different body, but nobody even got to swap bodies either. Things are just back to normal, when they could have been extraordinary.

…Then the next day, after homeroom, Yui directly confesses to John, gushing about how much she wants to be with him, do things for him, including sex. Especially sex. It’s sudden… and hilarious. Yui is still as regimented and organized as usual— she is still Yui in the core of her being. Yet she treats the idea of sex extremely casually and is so focused on jumping John’s bones that it’s a wonder all she does is kiss the boy. I won’t say that Yui is better when she’s horny, but I do enjoy some Horny Yui.

John quickly pieces together that the device affected Yui, giving her Maria’s relationship memories, and is left to stew over the fact that he forever changed his childhood friend’s mind with no way to fix her. Then, just as John gauging how DEEP he is in here, he learns this was not an isolated incident. Katrina has been affected, Kyoko has been affected, seemingly every woman in Tina Koya was affected, and the ramifications of this are immense. …Then as John leaves to investigate the school, the scenario ends, and I can understand why.

Maria Mania is presented pretty seriously for its first half, with a good deal of dread and introspection as John realizes that he biffed it, big time. Yet the moment John meets with Yui after class, the story largely loses that angle, introducing the world to Horny Yui and building upon the chaos by revealing that far more than just Yui were altered by the device.

This could easily lead into a storyline where John is forced to choose who he wants as a romantic partner and related sexual/romantic hi-jinks. If he refuses to go team orange or team grape, John could be left alone and effectively friendless, consigning himself to a worse life after having so many opportunities thrust before him. Or the story could go the maximum sexy shenanigans route and turn Tina Koya into the banging capital of country as every girl in school becomes as dick-hungry as Maria. Considering this is Maria Mania, I would expect the latter, but taking such a pivot could be seen as too extreme and risk affecting characters negatively.

It’s a storyline that hadn’t decide on where it would or could go, and the creator was not able to reconcile this tonal inconsistency. I would say that this is why you should outline EVERYTHING. If you don’t you wind up making a mess! Though, that is a lot harder to manage with a collaborative project, as who wants to write 60,000 words based on someone else’s outline?

Maria Mania has an interesting set-up, but on its own, I consider it to be like too many Student Transfer scenarios that cap in at just under an hour. Much of its story is dedicated to setting up its ideas, which is perfectly fine if they lead somewhere, but this road was left unfinished. It’s a nifty bit of history for the game, but unlike the Natsumi Swap route, it does not have enough exploration to feel like it does the idea justice.

…Also, this Maria Mania raises way, way too many questions about how the alien remote works if it can affect an entire school in just one go. The continuity ramifications— assuming we still care about those— are bonkers.
