As someone who did not grow up with CRT displays, or at least they were phased out so early in my life that I genuinely cannot remember gaming on them, I developed a fondness for older games being emulated as sharply as they could be. Or in other words, I like older games to have big, chunky, and clean pixels or smooth blocky anti-aliased polygons, all projected in HD resolutions (without stretching). However, one of the problems with up-resing 3D games like this is the fact that most textures are very low resolutions, and remaking textures is a very intensive process. Yet just this past week I discovered of what could easily be described as witchcraft, as it is an AI neural network that can be used to recreate and remaster video game textures.

Rundown (4/29-5/05) The Western AAA Game Industry is Not for Me

With E3 just over the horizon, I have been thinking about the western AAA game industry and more specifically how I have grown so increasingly disinterested in it over the years. I mean, I have not touched a western AAA title that was developed specifically for 8th generation consoles, and the only ones I am interested in fall into two camps. First party Sony titles like Ratchet & Clank and Horizon: Zero Dawn along with continuations of series that I fondly enjoyed like Agents of Mayhem and Mass Effect Andromeda. It honestly strikes me as an odd shift compared to how open I was about things last generation, but after being burnt out by so many western AAA titles, I guess I just grew apathetic to the lot of them.

So, you know how I’m an accounting major and how I previously mentioned that I am going to be done with school this August? Well, funny thing about that. In order to become a Certified Public Accountant, which is a goal of mine, one does not simply need a Bachelor’s degree as I thought. Instead, they at least 150 credit hours, which are best met by obtaining a Master’s degree. So, in short, I am going to start taking graduate classes this fall and should be done around December 2019, before then taking the CPA exam. And here I was looking forward to being done with school once and for all.

So, I was directed to a three hour unscripted lecture on the story of Kingdom Hearts. I watched it, and am almost amazed at how much the story resembles the slew of fan fiction that it inspired. It is the most contrived and convoluted thing I have ever seen go on for this long, and I am convinced that Square Enix lacks any sort of narrative editors and that Tetsuya Nomura should never, ever, be put in charge with the story for anything ever again. Now all of that incomprehensibility is inside me, and it will never leave. Anyways, there’s a bunch of news this week for some reason, and now I need to talk about it. (more…)

Punch Line Review

CoverThe more I think about it, the Zero Escape series is one of the biggest influences I had to start writing proper stories and developing whatever odd idea that popped into my head into a short story, novella, or novel. It’s been almost three years since I started, and I feel that I have gotten far, far better at writing, storytelling, characterization, plot outlining, and so forth. Sure, no one really gives a toss about my work, but I’m enjoying it and am doing exactly what I want to with a story that I hope I do finally put to bed, once and for all within the next few years… Anyhow, the writer of Zero Escape, Kotaro Uchikoshi, wrote this anime, I watched it, and here’s my thoughts on it in the form of a review.
