Atrocity 02: The White Awakening
Part 1: Summer’s Not A Bummer
Date: Sunday, August 14, 1988
Time: 23:37 UTC – 18:37 LT
Location: St. Louis, Missouri
The sky was painted in a gorgeous array of colors. A setting yellow sun was surrounded with vivid oranges and pinks, while the clouds ranged from periwinkle to indigo. A comforting sight that spoke to the beauty of the natural world. With a crisp summer breeze coming in from the north, the city was thriving with life, with people of all ages eking out the last bit of joy from their weekends.
While school would not be in session for a few more weeks, children were frolicking across the school grounds. Enjoying the fixtures of the playground, the wide open fields, and especially the baseball field. A dozen-some-odd kids, ages eight to eleven, lined the metal bleachers, while the field was home to a full team of children, all dressed in light summery clothing, looking determined, if a bit exhausted. A scoreboard affixed to the fence showed that the kids were deep into the ninth inning, with a score of 5 to 4.
The losing team was so close to breaking things off in a tie, with third base taken by a Hispanic girl. But the pitcher, a White boy, his eyes covered by a red baseball cap, was determined to keep her there with the fastballs he threw, leading the Asian boy up to bat to strike out.
Pitcher: “That’s three for three. Get outta here!”
Batter: “C’mon, you’re playing dirty!”
Pitcher: “Nu-uh, I’m playing to win!”
Batter: “Gah! Lexxi, you better put this jerk in his place!”
The current batter then handed the wooden bat to the next person in line. A young Black girl named Lexxi, dressed in a sky blue pinafore and shoes stained with dirt and grass, her hair tucked into a pair of poofy pigtails. She grabbed the bat from the boy with gusto, and pointed it at the pitcher as a statement. That she was gonna win this game!
The pitcher scoffed, chewing the taste-faded gum in his mouth before dismissively blowing a bubble. He didn’t see her as a threat, but her teammates and the crowd sure did, cheering for her as she came up to the plate and adapted her stance. It was a strong stance. Her grip was just right. And from the smile on her face, she considered this game already won.
Gripping the ball, the pitcher flinched, going back and forth with his stance to unnerve or confuse Lexxi, looking like he was going with a screwball before swerving into a cutter. It was crafty and underhanded, but nothing Lexxi couldn’t handle. With a crack of the bat, the ball went flying high into the sky. The kids in the field clamored, trying to see where the ball would land, but with the setting sun shining through the trees just right, they lost track of it. Nobody was quite sure where it went, so the girl on third base dashed to home plate, while Lexxi moved as quickly as she could. She took first and second before looking back at the field, seeing that her opponents hadn’t even found the ball. Within a split-second decision, she went for third, and didn’t even look back as she landed a home run.
The kid manning the scoreboard updated it to 5 to 6 and just like that, the game was over. The underdogs pulled through at the last minute and rejoiced while the losing team was still searching for the ball. After two minutes, they finally found it wedged in a tree branch. There wasn’t any bitterness or animosity between either team. They both did their best and were good enough sports to not rub it in the noses of the losers or accuse the winners of foul play. They had their fun, that’s what was important, and just as they began their celebration, they heard a merry jingle coming down the nearest street.
The thirty-something children formed a cheery crowd as they gathered around the ice cream truck. They dug through their pockets for coins and single bills as they placed their orders one after another, giving them to the jolly gray-haired Black man who offered them a smorgasbord of treats. Most kids had enough pocket change to afford this small treat and join their friends in this indulgence of sugary delights, but some were digging through stray bits of lint, finding only nickels and dimes.
Kid: “Aw, drats! I don’t have enough…”
Ice Cream Man: “Well… tell ya what kid, have one on the house!”
Kid: “Whoa! You really mean it, mister?”
Ice Cream Man: “Sure. You kids pretty much cleaned me out for the day. Just make sure you stop by next weekend.”
Kid: “O-Of course.”
Ice Cream Man: “Now, once you’re all done, you better head on home. It’s getting dark, and I’m sure your parents are getting dinner ready.”
The children in attendance all heard their words, but none were in a rush. Even the youngest among them knew that nothing good came from eating their ice cream too fast, and this gave them a few more minutes to spend with their friends. To wrap up whatever tangent or conversation they were in the middle of. But as their ice cream bars were reduced to sticks and sticky wrappers, the children began to disperse, saying goodbye as they clustered up into groups and returned home. They spread out in all directions, fanning out into smaller clusters at every intersection.
Lexxi, the girl who won her team the game, had a large group following her at first, but it quickly dispersed to only her and another one of her teammates. A flaxen-haired White girl with cerulean eyes.
White Girl: “It’s a shame that summer’s almost over. There’s so much to do, but so little time…”
Lexxi: “What’re you talking about? We’ve been doing all sorts of stuff!”
Naomi: “Well, we never went to the beach—”
Lexxi: “We went to the waterpark, and that’s better than the beach! They don’t have water slides at the beach!”
Naomi: “That’s not the point, they’re just different! Ugh… I guess I just don’t want to go back to school. During summer, we can do whatever we want! But when school starts, we just gotta sit down and pay attention a bunch.”
Lexxi: “Yeah, you gotta pay attention, but that’s how you get smarter! You gotta learn how to be an adult if you wanna be a real adult!”
Naomi: “But it takes so darn long! I don’t know how I’m going to stand another ten years of this.”
Lexxi: “Wouldn’t it be 14 if you go to college?”
Naomi: “Argh! Don’t remind me!”
Lexxi: “C’mon, it won’t be too bad. Everybody knows Mr. Gottlieb is a grouch, but we’re with Ms. Williams next year!”
Naomi: “Eh? Oh, right. I almost forgot. Maybe it won’t be so bad…”
Lexxi: “That reminds me, you wanna go shopping for school stuff tomorrow? My dad’s taking me after he gets back from work.”
Naomi: “I… I’d like to not think about it for another week.”
Lexxi: “Suit yourself, but don’t expect me to keep dragging you to school every morning. We’re gonna be third graders, and being a third grader means being self-suh-fish-ant!”
Naomi: “I’ll try… See ya tomorrow, Lexxi. Ryan’s mom said we could come over to his place after lunch.”
Lexxi: “Cool! See ya then!”
The two 8-year-old girls then departed at the end of a block, heading off to their own homes. Digging through her pockets for a key, Lexxi opened up the door of a quaint single family home, immediately hearing the sounds of the television and of food prep in the background. Lexxi kicked off her shoes and patted down her pinafore as she attempted to stealthily return home, only for her mother to come barging out of the kitchen. A Black woman with a short, slender frame, her charcoal black hair straightened, dressed casually in a plain top and jean capris.
Lexxi’s Mother: “Missy, do you know what time it is?”
The wall clock in the living room told Lexxi the answer, but she didn’t want to acknowledge it.
Lexxi: “N-No.”
Lexxi’s Mother: “It’s 7:09, and what’s your curfew?”
Lexxi: “S-Seven. I was out with friends and we were busy playing baseball. I headed home run right after we left and—”
???: “Honey, she got home just fine. What’s the big problem?”
The voice came from the living room sofa. Lexxi’s father got off the couch and came into the entranceway. A White man, a few years older than his wife, with a thinning hairline, a dark mustache, a bit of a gut, and a stature just barely over six feet.
Lexxi’s Mother: “Kevin, you know what happens when kids stay out too late. Every other week you hear about another kid going missing and—”
Kevin: “Melony, America’s a big country. Back when we were kids, even more kids probably went missing, but that was always local news. With these 24 hour national news stations, they need to talk about something, and they choose to exploit missing kids.”
Lexxi: “Yeah, Mom! What Dad said!”
Melony: “Alright, alright, it might be a nine-in-a-million chance, but it’s still a chance… and I just don’t know what I’d do if something happened to you, Muffin.”
Lexxi: “So, I’m not in trouble?”
Kevin: “She was just playing with her friends, outside, being a kid. Let her off the hook!”
With both her daughter and husband against her, Melony put her hands on her hips and sighed, accepting defeat.
Melony: “Alright. I’ll let you off with a warning this time. But if you’re going to be late again, at least call me.”
Lexxi: “What if I don’t have any quarters?”
Melony: “That’s what collect calls are for. Now go up and wash your face and armpits. Dinner should be ready in five minutes.”
With a gleeful nod, Lexxi darted upstairs and to the main bathroom, her belly rumbling at the very mention of dinner.
Part 2: Mixing Black and White
Date: Sunday, August 14, 1988
Time: 00:39 UTC – 19:39 LT
Location: St. Louis, Missouri
As the family cleaned their plates of their spaghetti dinner, Lexxie was in the middle of enthusiastically telling them of how she won her team the baseball game today. As good parents, they paid close attention to her story, nodding along and emoting as she reached the climax.
Lexxi: “Nobody else saw the ball, but I knew where it went! It’s a home run so long as nobody can throw the ball at you, and I know kids have lost loads of balls in that tree!”
Kevin: “Were you aiming for that tree?”
Lexxi: “…Not really. It’s a ball, so I dunno where it’ll go after I hit it, but I ran like heck when I saw that everyone else was confused, and kept on running!”
Kevin: “Well, you can tell where the ball will go with practice. You just need to remember that the force of your swing and the angle it hits the ball determine its direction. It’s a careful balance. Most people can hit a ball, but few can hit it well.”
Lexxi: “Ah, so it’s not supposed to be easy?”
Kevin: “If it was, would people watch it or dedicate their lives to it?”
Lexxi: “I dunno… I guess not.”
Melony: “It sounds like you had a big day, so how about a treat?”
Lexxi: “Eh? Well, I did have ice cream with everyone after the game.”
Melony: “From the sound of it, you’ve already burned off all those calories by now. So I think you can splurge with some cookies. But just a serving size!”
Melony got up from her chair and walked over to a cabinet, getting on the tips of her toes as she pulled down the cookie jar, and popped out three chocolate sandwich cookies with white creme filling. She put them on a plate, grabbed a jug of milk out of the fridge, but as she turned around, she saw her husband reaching into the cookie jar, plucking one out for himself.
Melony: “Kevin. Did you forget that you’re supposed to be on a diet? No sweets.”
Kevin: “C’mon, Mel! It’s a Sunday! Can’t a dad have a cookie with his little girl?”
Melony stared at her husband for a second before bringing her eyes to the cookie jaw, sighing before grabbing it from him… and grabbing a cookie for herself.
Melony: “Only if the mom can too.”
The parents returned to the kitchen table with the five cookies and a glass of milk, placing them in the center of the table. Lexxi looked on at them, a bit perplexed, grabbing one and investigating it.
Kevin: “…Have we never given you these?”
Lexxi: “No, I don’t think so…”
Lexxi then bit into the cookie as it was, carefully chewing it as a smile bloomed onto her face.
Lexxi: “But it’s really good!”
Kevin: “Heh. Sure, but the best way to eat these cookies is to dunk them in milk. Here, watch me.”
Kevin then grabbed one of the sandwich cookies and twisted the chocolate biscuits , causing the sandwich cookie to break into two, with one half retaining the majority of the white creme. He licked the white creme off with a few laps of his tongue, looking almost like a dog in how much he was savoring it. He then took the two chocolate biscuits and dunked them into the milk, just long enough to absorb some of the milk, but not long enough for them to crumble. One after another, he placed them into his mouth before looking at Lexxi with a satisfied grin.
Melony: “That’s how your father likes them, Lexxi, but here’s how your mother likes them.”
Melony proceeded to take her sandwich cookie and simply place it into the milk, causing the milk to soften both biscuits and latch itself onto the creme. Then, once thoroughly moistened, she took a bite out of the cookie as it was. Her face was beaming as the flavor danced across her palate, while Kevin stared at her like she was a Martian.
Kevin: “That’s… a way to eat an Oreo, I guess.”
Melony: “Let Lexxi decide what she wants. It’s important she knows what options she has, as there’s no wrong way to eat an Oreo.”
Despite the parents’ claims, these were not Oreos. They were a store brand knock-off, but to a casual cookie enjoyer, there was no difference.
Lexxi, having already finished her first cookie, looked at her parents’ display and the two cookies remaining, the wheels in her mind turning before she happened upon an idea. She twisted both cookies apart and combined the sides with creme together, forming a cookie with extra filling. Then she took the two chocolate biscuits, dunking them in the milk, before eating them one after another. Lastly, she took the merged cookie with extra creme and dunked that into the milk before finally plopping it into her mouth.
Kevin and Melony looked at each other with surprise over this display before smiling at their daughter, happy to see her learning from both of them, even if it meant trying something different.
Part 3: Night of the White Terror
Date: Sunday, August 14, 1988
Time: 03:00 UTC – 22:00 LT
Location: St. Louis, Missouri
With dinner done, it was time for Lexxi to wash up and get ready for bed. She was still young enough to avoid daily baths, so she simply threw on some pajamas, brushed her teeth, and headed off to her room. It was summer, so she could get away with going past her usual bedtime of 21:30 and stay up an extra half hour. Being the studious sort, she preoccupied herself with a book, trying to fill out her summer reading list so she could get a prize from the local library.
Once her bedtime arrived, Lexxi was ready to lie in her bed and doze off, but as she got up to turn off her lights, she heard a scream coming from the hallway. Curious, she poked her head out of the door and listened for the noise, before hearing it again, coming from her parents’ bedroom.
She cautiously scampered over to the room, knocking on the door, only to hear the scream again. Lexxi knew she was not supposed to go in when her parents closed the door, but this seemed like an emergency. She timidly opened up the door, peering her head into the room and… she didn’t know what she was looking at.
Her father was on the ground, wearing only his boxers, screams eking out of his mouth, his entire body shaking violently. Melony looked at him in shock, and right as Lexxi came into the room, it began.
The first thing to… change was the hair. Kevin had been a fairly hairy man, with back hair and chest hair to compensate for where he was growing thin. With every vibration of his body, more and more hair loosened, gathering on the carpeted floor in large clumps, continuing everywhere from his face to his feet, until his entire body was bald. As the sea of hair shook off his person, his skin began to redden, losing the summer tan he accumulated and becoming something pasty, something pinkish and raw. It began in splotches, growing from random parts of his person until it consumed and recolored every speck of skin on his person.
In this state, he looked sickly. Like a cancer patient who had lost their hair from rigorous experimental medical practices. Melony mustered up the courage to approach him in this state, but as she did, Kevin whipped his head around. He opened up his clenched mouth and eyes, revealing that the changes ran deeper. His eyes were bloodshot, with irises so thin they were not even visible, leaving just a speck of black in a sphere of white and red. While his teeth… were horrible. Within minutes, they had morphed into something jagged, yellowed, and considerably taller, the top and bottom buck teeth both being nearly a centimeter taller.
Kevin shuttered his eyes and teeth after this momentary flourish, sealing his face as he felt other changes carry out.
The cartilage of his ears wiggled, unfurling itself from its deliberate shape and becoming flat against his skull, merging with the skin. Every contour soon laid flat, and the impression of a dedicated ear was replaced with a small ring of skin, protecting a hole with a gooey paste-like substance. Definitely not ear wax.
His nose morphed in a similar manner, receding into his face and pulling up his nostrils, the cartilage reforming itself into a pig-like snout that looked unnerving on a human face. Though, it was becoming harder and harder to call his face human. With no eyebrows or eyelashes and such a sickly complexion, he already looked bizarre.
Then, as Melony stared at what was once her husband’s face, she saw his lips recede into thin flaps, exposing the gums and making his jagged, bestial teeth unignorable. So large he could barely even close his mouth. While his eyes… lost their pupils, leaving behind only vacant white orbs, lacking even red veins.
His shape was that of a human, but his face was that of a monster— a demon— and before his family could comprehend what they were seeing, the changes crept to the rest of his body.
His torso became pudgy all around, almost like a uniform tube of flesh. His neck receded into the rest of his body, pulling his head closer and closer into the torso that it stopped being clear where one ended and the other began. Then… there were his hands. They widened and elongated, becoming bigger in every way. The skin of his cuticles swallowed his fingernails, suppressing them only for them to emerge, their shape transformed from a protective shell into what could only be described as a claw. They still held the dexterity of human hands, yet their maligned form made them less of a tool and more of a weapon.
His feet underwent a more drastic transformation, losing the sturdy base as his bones cracked and skin broke apart, reshaping these extremities into something matching his clawed hands. These drastic changes to his feet forced Kevin to the ground. He squirmed and throbbed as parts of his body continued to shift before grasping the carpeting with his four clawed hands, attempting to stand up. In doing so, the shape and function of his limbs transformed, arms and legs becoming more uniform. Until this bipedal creature became a quadruped,
With this loss of an undeniable human feature, it became impossible to, physically, view this thing as Kevin. Nothing about him looked like a father of a husband, but… a monster. A grotesque amalgam of human and beast, whose voice muttered in a harsh guttural tone that was as horrifying as it was disgusting. It was hard to look at, terrifying to behold… but the transformation was not yet complete.
From the creature’s tailbone, a new appendage slithered out, wiggling as it grew, inch-by-inch, before finally erupting outward into a fleshy tail. It was 40 centimeters long, with a circumference of 5 centimeters affixed to a creature that, if it were to stand upright, was nearly 180 centimeters tall. Whatever this creature was… it could not be called human. It was a vile hybrid between a human and a hairless rat that was more revolting than either sum of its parts could ever be on their own.
As Lexxi looked on at this sight, gobsmacked, she was pulled away by Melony. She shut the bedroom door, ran downstairs, and, with a cordless phone in her hand, dialed 911. Her actions seemed composed, but they were merely the byproduct of adrenaline. Her body was moving faster than the mind could process. All she understood was that she needed to save herself and, more importantly, her daughter, from that… thing.
By the time she arrived in the living room, the call finally connected. Melony breathed in relief as she heard the other end spring to life, but rather than hear the voice of a dispatcher, she heard the voice of a cold, vengeful, woman. A voice that would not respond to her pleas and merely repeated the same phrase ad nauseam.
???: “Embrace your might. Go seize the night. Go reap our rights. Bring them the fight. Make the world White. Non Silba Sed Anthar.”
Melony hung up, her head aching all of a sudden, and immediately tried calling someone else. But instead of being greeted with the reassuring voice of a friend… she heard that cold voice again, repeating the same message.
She tried a third time, this time calling a non-local number, but… it was the same. The phones were down, hijacked by… whatever this was.
Lexxi: “M-Mom, what’s happened to Dad? Is he gonna be okay?”
Melony wanted to answer her daughter’s question, but there was no answer she could give. One minute, the world made sense, the next it didn’t. She needed time to think, needed help, needed—
Right as Melony was wracking her mind with worry, the sound of shattering glass forced her back to reality. She turned to see the source, and was met with the sight of another monster. A monster just like the one she saw in her bedroom. It broke through the window, and was bleeding over the carpet, with glass covering and cutting through its body. Except its blood… wasn’t red. It was white. A glowing white that might have been beautiful, if not tied to such a wretched, unpleasant creature. Despite its immense wounds, the monster stood up on its four legs, looking at the two with its white eyes, and craned open its mouth full of sharp teeth.
Lexxi screamed, trying to escape her mother’s grip and run away. She had the right idea, but there was only so far you could run from a creature like this, and even in her panic-wracked state, Melony knew that. She grabbed her purse and ran across the house to the garage. She and her husband shared a car, and it was still there, untouched by the madness that was seeping into her world.
As Melony moved, Lexxi was shouting, crying, asking question after question, but her mother could not expend the energy to answer. She did not even give herself the time to strap in her daughter, instead throwing her onto the passenger side while shouting at her to buckle up. She felt awful about that, but now was not the time for pleasantries or kindness. Now was the time to run. Key in the ignition, finger on the wireless garage door opener, foot on the gas pedal. The actions flowed from one another as Melony trusted her impulses and, soon enough, she was out of her house, on her street, driving… somewhere else.
She felt the adrenaline fade from her mind as she watched her home grow smaller in the rear-view mirror. Relief filled her being… only for that to vanish as she looked at the road. Right before her, illuminated by her headlights, was another one of those repulsive things. And rather than run from it, Melony slammed her foot down and drove at it. The monster ran at her, only to smack its face against the grill of her car and slink under it.
Lexxi shouted as this happened, begging for her mother’s attention.
Lexxi: “MOMMY! What’s going oooon?!”
Melony: “Lexxi, shut up! I don’t know what the FUCK is going on here, and I’m just as confused as you are! I love you… but I need you to be quiet! This… This isn’t normal…”
That was an understatement. Just looking past her windshield, it was clear that this was not some isolated incident involving a mere three monsters. For she could see over a dozen, running through the streets, across lawns, leaping out windows, and tearing down doors. People were running. Some had the foresight to get inside a car first. But most were on their feet, running as they were pursued by creatures far more agile than they could hope to be. The sight moved too fast for Melony to grasp the true extent of what she was seeing, but for all the people she could see running around, she did not see a single White person.
Lexxi called out to her to stop as she passed by a friend’s house, but Melony kept moving forward at 60 kilometers an hour, only slowing down as she took a corner. In a situation like this, stopping meant death. It meant that these monsters could latch onto the car and pry it open, getting to her and her daughter. She moved as fast as she could to protect herself… but it was not enough.
The sound of banging and piercing metal boomed from overhead, and as she looked up and behind her, she saw it. Poking from a freshly carved hole was one of those monsters, staring down at Melony and Lexxi as it effortlessly chewed metal in its vicious maw. Melony slammed the brakes, hoping that the sudden change in velocity would loosen this monster’s grip, but it didn’t. It merely continued to pry away at the roof of the car while the two sat there, helpless.
As the creature grew close enough to plant a claw on Melony, she panicked, took her eyes off the road, and slammed the car into a tree. Melony and Lexxi felt their bodies wack forward, but the monster on top of their car was unperturbed. The car was totaled, monsters were everywhere, and any attempt to flee now would lead to a certain death. Lexxi screamed as she comprehended the situation she was in, and her mother joined her, knowing that there were only two ways this could end.
Either they die here and now.
Or they witness a miracle.
…
Fortunately for these two… today was the day of miracles.

it’s over
It’s not over until the GOP sanctions genocide and every queer person in the country is hanging from a noose. Humans can persevere a lot, and we will survive this. It will SUCK, but that is no cause to give up. Be sad, be mad, but do not surrender or say it is over. Because so long as your body is still warm with life, it is not over.
