Undertale Review

ANIMEUndertale is a game that has been on my radar for quite some time, although, as I like to do, I quickly ignored it after discovering it in late 2013. Two years later it’s the talk of the town with ModeSeven and Ian Samson doing fanart of it and tens coming from all sorts of gaming outlets, putting Undertale up in the higher 90s on those ranking sites that tweens like to obsess over. After playing the game, I agree that this is completely justified, as Undertale is nothing short of fantastic. (more…)

Danganronpa: Another Episode – Ultra Despair Girls Review

2015-09-09-213227About a year ago I went through the two mainline DanganronpasTrigger Happy Havoc and Goodbye Despair, both of which I thought were fantastic games about deception, murder, hope, despair, and being very dark while also being profusely silly and overall fun. As such, I was quick to order a copy of Ultra Despair Girls, which acted as my one full-priced retail purchase for the year of 2015, and I had high hopes that it would be among my favorite titles of the year, but that’s unfortunately not the case… (more…)

Dust: An Elysian Tail Review

headerI originally planned on opening this review with an anecdote about how the “Indie” movement for the game industry has more or less ended and how the novelty and value of being a game made in terrible personally inflicted conditions means very little unless a publisher picks you up and shows you to the world. The industry in general has a discoverability problem, and when it comes to the fifty games released on Steam every week, it becomes all the worse… Anyways, here’s a game made by the animator for Jazz Jackrabbit. Higurashi: When They Cry Chapter 1 – Onikakushi Review

2015-08-18_00016Higurashi: When They Cry is a series of visual novels originally released at Comiket in 2002, and since then have received fourteen Sound Novels, a 38 volume manga series, a total of fifty anime episodes and OVAs, 21 light novels, two live action films, and more. Following a particularly poor translation of the eight main titles of this series, MangaGamer decided that while they are porting over quality visual novels and eroge, they could tackle this beast with their workforce. Oh, but they could not secure the assets from the recently released PS3 version for this PC release. But, somebody made a mod so you may install the backgrounds, sprites, and Japanese voiceover in order to help enhance the experience. You can find out how to install the mod in the Steam Community Guides for this title. (more…)

Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords Review

headerThe idea of somebody going out and picking up a decade old licensed PC game’s sequel, giving it widescreen, 5K resolution, controller, and Mac and Linux support is nothing short of baffling to me. Not that it is the reason I decided to give this much praised title a go, but it did make the experience more enjoyable as I no longer had to deal with using a proprietary widescreen mod that did not work that well. That said, this review is only based on roughly twenty-five hours with the game, mostly because I can now tell when I reach a point where my opinion of a game will only grow more and more negative, and I’d rather stop playing while I can still view the game fondly. Epic Battle Fantasy 4 Review

EBF4 4I feel as if I missed the prime time of Newgrounds as I did not discover the site until about 2006, when I promptly enjoyed a plethora of… it was mostly just sprite and somewhat shoddily drawn animated video game parodies along with stuff like TTA. The reason I bring this up is because I watched some of the flash animations of a similar nature done by the same artist, Matt Roszak, back in the day, and they were awesome to me back when I was thirteen So in short, I saw something that I found a bit nostalgic, picked it up for about four dollars, and played it for fifteen hours. Borderlands 2 Review

2015-06-25_00019I viewed the first Borderlands to be of so little value, to be so worthless, that it is the only game I threw in the trash. More specifically, I threw it into a ditch just outside of my childhood Kindergarten, which I walk past whenever coming home from school. That ditch only really existed to prevent flooding, by gathering excess sewage water and was likely an incredibly filthy place that I rolled around in regularly as a child. It also had these metal sewage gates that I always wanted to wander into, but I was too afraid of crocodiles to do so… Anyhow, I gave money to a Video Game Museum and was given Borderlands 2 was a reward. And despite having given it twenty hours about a year and a half ago, I decided that I would give the series a… fourth chance. However, I was only able to get about twenty-eight hours through the game before I hit my threshold and dropped the game like a backpack full of rocks, glad to be rid of it. (more…)

Portal 2 Review

portal2-1I actually tried writing a review of the original Portal back when I first started this blog, and had starry eyed ambitions of garnering something of a following. Yet I ran into issues when it came to elaborating the review beyond three paragraphs, as there is not a lot to say about the game unless you get into full blown analysis, in which case you could write a novella about how well designed that game is. It’s the sort of title I like to revisit every year or two, and walk away impressed every single time. But after giving it a whirl, this time on PC, I decided to reach into my surprisingly shallow backlog and give Portal 2 another go. Well, make that goes, as I went through it once regularly, and once with the developer commentary. (more…)

Saints Row IV Review

2015-05-20_00076As the years have gone on, I feel as if I have gotten increasingly more cynical, and less permissive of things that I openly would have praised in year’s past. I do truly and always want to sing the praises of just about anything I believe to deserve it, but there are and were moments where I was a bit too excited and felt too justified in saying nice things that I ignored some of the negligence thoughts that now fill my mind whenever I play any game, which kinda sucks now that I think about it. Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim Review

ysnapishtim52Note: I re-reviewed this title in 2020. Please disregard this review.

If I had to give a brief summary of how the Ys series works in regards to its final products, I would say that the first few titles were more experimental than anything, involving large changes to the gameplay and point of view with each installment before the series hit a sour note with part V, and went away for a generation, only to come back with this title, Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim, and revitalized the franchise for a total of three games before changing up the gameplay once. I previously reviewed the spiritual follow-ups Oath in Felghana and Origin, both of which I liked quite a bit, but felt that many of the RPG elements of these games bogged it down, and its emphasis on story was a bit out of place in such a frantic high paced and cathartic action game. This being a prequel, not much has changed. (more…)

Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse Review

maxresdefaultPart of me wonders if I have simply become too bitter towards games over the three years I’ve been reviewing them. I truly do want to see the good in all games, but my mind is so fixated on the negatives that I end up seeing so many titles I was genuinely interested in and more than willing to love as simply okay. Even if I am positive towards a game, I often wonder if I was too positive, and gave an opinion that was not accurate to how I truly felt about it. Plus, whenever I go against the general consensus of a game, I can’t help but wonder if I am wrong for holding such an opinion, and perhaps expressed it far too negatively. Anyhow, here’s a review of a stealth released PC port of a sequel to a game that I honestly struggle to determine whether or not I think is all that good. (more…)

Sword of Asumi Review

sword_of_edo_by_embervesent-d79z94mI really want to one day create a visual novel of my own, and am fully aware that it is not that hard to do. However, I am currently trying to do some regular novels before I aim to do something wherein I will need to find an artist to provide assets for me. Plus, I need to build up the writing talent I feel is necessary in order to create something worthy of being placed on sale at a digital marketplace, such as Steam… Kinda like Sword of Asumi, a $16 $12 visual novel I bought at a discount to help fund convince the creator to Kickstart a sequel, only to then see it as part of a $2 IndieGala bundle. Freedom Wars Review

freedom-wars-listing-thumb-01-us-psvita-15aug14I’m fresh off of a week of depression and inferiority filled office work that I spent my Spring Break doing, making it not much of a break at all, but the very concepts of breaks during schooling is nothing short of devilish, and they should be banned. I know that children should be instilled with hope lest they get mental problems, but those who have a ‘clean’ mind are those who do not deserve a spot in the utopian reworking of society of Genocider Jay… Also I played the hit Vita exclusive Freedom Wars for… I’d guess fifteen hours, got to the fifth mission set and decided that I played enough to review it, as the game was getting on my plums, and once you’re on my plums, you can’t really get off them. Transistor Review

wpCZxasIt’s been awhile since I put up a review, due to how I was preoccupied with Neptunia for far longer than I should have, was indecisive about what game I wanted to play next, and had work related shenanigans on top of trying to get a novella’s pre-production done, but that’s a story for another post. Transistor seemed the most appealing, even though I was pretty indifferent towards Bastion, to the point where I barely remember the title, but I don’t think that will be the case with Transistor. Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth 1 Review

Hyperdimension_Neptunia_Re_Birth1_startI don’t think I ever watched any proper gameplay footage of the original Hyperdimension Neptunia. In preparation for writing this review, and curiosity, I gave it a glance, and it is amazing that the game was A, released, B, localized, and C, given not only two sequels, but spawned a franchise so large that, between June 2014 and Winter 2015 should be home to seven releases in North America, and two or more ports. The original honestly looks like the worst, slowest, most boring JRPG to ever have an even remotely creative idea in its head. It actually makes it hard to call Re;Birth 1 a remake, as it is largely unrecognizable as the same game in regards to anything beyond its base storyline and characters. (more…)

Saints Row: Gat Out of Hell Review

saints-row-4-gat-out-of-hell-listingI have professed pretty regularly that I have nothing shy of a strong affection towards the Saints Row series, well, namely to parts two and four. I have mentioned my issues with Saints Row: The Third but most of those stem from how much I enjoy the two aforementioned titles and very much want to love everything related to the series. HuniePopA couple months ago I was redirected to a minute long excerpt from HuniePop, and with that I felt confident enough in tossing $10 to preorder it, as I never heard of the Kickstarter. Dark Souls: Prepare To Die Edition Review

dark-soulsAs I have been getting on in the years, I have been struggling with time management, and the fact that I have spent the past… month working full time does not help. Planetarian: The Reverie of a Little Planet Review

reverieBefore I begin, I just want to say how happy I am seeing something like this. A decade old visual novel being released far after whatever western fans it had accepted it would never arrive, coming and being released to… a pretty small audience based on the maximum players at a given time on Steam. It almost makes me feel a bit bad for buying it at half price, giving the publishers half the money, but that’s just me being stingy with my money, as I want to hoard as much as I can before the next big disaster occurs, and I’m going to need a mech to fend of the subhumans from the underground laboratories… or something. Pokemon Alpha Sapphire Review

secret-base-artwork-pokemon-omega-ruby-alpha-sapphireMan do I have a lot of little things to say for this pre-review thingie. Pokemon X was evil and consumed 300 hours in the game itself, and about 25 more because spreadsheets.  I originally was not going to play this remake until the New 3DS came out, but I did not have anything that pressing to play. Ruby and Sapphire were the first Pokemon games I really got into, and they terrified the hell out of me, because I did not understand how to video game. Pokemon being annualized is something I dislike conceptually as the base needs a lot of refinement that I could write out if requested, and will mention in this review. (more…)

A Bird Story Review

headerTo The Moon has been on my list of games to review a second time for a while if I am being honest, due to how it is another piece I believe I may better describe, but also because I really want to play it again, as the game was nothing short of delightful. Yes, I’m sure that some would argue if it is a proper video game, but that doesn’t change the fact that it is a thing that is great and I like a whole bunch. A Bird Story is a taste of sorts for the sequel Finding Paradise, and it brushes up against the definition of game notably more than its predecessor did. (more…)

Yes, yes, I reviewed this back in June, found it to be very upsetting, but felt I should give it another look after being compelled to look at its predecessor and finding myself enjoying the game far more than I expected. Okay, backstory for me in particular involving Sonic. I was born in 1994, Sonic The Hedgehog was the first game I ever played, adored the hell out of the Gamecube Sonic games, and maintained some sort of connection to the franchise for… well, it’s still not gone as of yet, but is nothing like it used to be and is more akin to what people who got invested into something that continued well after they should have grown out of it, but can’t just stop. That said, I do not have as much free time as I did a few years ago, and feel as if I should get out a review a week, so I only got thirty hours into this game I had previously beaten, and was getting bored with it on top of that. Yin-Yang: X-Change Alternative Review

XCA Artwork Anger…Look if Destructoid reviewed Boob Wars, I can review Yin-Yang: X-Change Alternative! Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance Review

76dI… I had very high hopes and extreme fears when this game was coming out, and when I picked it up a while ago. I am not good at character action games by any means, but was so taken in by the soundtrack that I felt I had to go through the game… which I did one and a half times. Still, saying I cleared, or beat the game would be a lie, as I only got through it on the super easy mode, and after repeating two encounters for two hours, each, I hit my limit and ceased my proper playthrough. I was half joking when I tweeted out “Likes: Metal Gear Rising Revengeance. Dislikes: Playing Metal Gear Rising Revengeance.” But no, that was far more accurate than I intended and… Let me explain this relationship properly. (more…)

Spec Ops: The Line Review

SOTL - Concept Art (4)So, in January of 2013, I played Special Operative: The Safety Line and wrote something I had very little confidence in. For whatever reason I did one better, bought a PC copy, and decided to play through it because… I guess I felt like it. punchOkay, so earlier this year I decided to revisit Batman: Arkham Asylum, where I investigated the doubt I felt after playing the game, and decided that I really did not find the game to be all that great. I gave it a 7.5 and all that, but not GOTY material in my book, just a surprisingly good liscense game. I did recall enjoying its sequel, Arkham City a bit more, but even after plowing through it I distinctly remember feeling a sense of emptiness, and I figured out why… at least partially. I mean, I’ve yet to reach max reviewed level, but I’ve at least gained ten since I started, right? (more…)

pusher-gameNote: I re-reviewed this game in 2019. Please disregard this original review.

Why did I play this game again? Why did I go through the obnoxious challenges a second time in order to get a meaningless 100% that some may say is incomplete as I did not get four Steam achievements? Why did I buy a game I did not necessarily like a second time? Well, the answer there is that it was part of a Sonic Pack on the Humble Store, which was discounted 50% or 75%. But yes, I am reviewing it again as my library has been drying up a bit, and by chance I glanced at my Sonic Generations review from back when and was not happy with what I saw. Super Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair Review

How long has it been since I cleared Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc? About a month? Well, I certainly did not want to wait very long before diving into its sequel, Super Danganronpa 2: Sayonara Despair… Except it is simply titled Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair because… reasons. Still, this shows how excited I was, and it was helped by hearing a few claim the title was better than the first one, which I loved if you don’t recall. Saints Row: The Third Review

2528915-4853251374-cast.If you put me on the stop at this very moment and asked me what my favorite franchises are in the realm of video games, I would probably ponder and stutter for a few seconds before spitting out Pokemon, Metal Gear, and Saints Row. The last one is naturally what I’m here to talk about, as while I do adore parts two and four, the first and third parts of this to be pentalogy are far lower on the totem pole of quality in my mind. While part one is the franchise before it really got its own identity, part three was where the franchise was established, became AAA to a certain extent, and had a staff that was 80% people who did not assist in building this franchise up. But that was three years ago, and I feel it is worth revisiting… That, and I was in the mood for a game with character creation, and this was the only one on my list of games I own which I ought to play. Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc Review

danganronpa-wallpaper-all-charactersAn updated 2016 review of this game has been posted here

Danganronpa’s apparent existence outside of Japan prior to its official release is something that confuses me greatly. Yes, there was an anime adaptation made three years after the first game’s release, but the original PSP title recieved a fan translation which was apparently something of a major hit with a certain subset of kids on Tumblr. Maybe I was just not paying enough attention to a title I never even knew existed until Zero Escape’s Director mentioned how he was buds with the Director of Danganronpa, but I guess that does not matter now, as I had a $20 bill I was willing to place into my Vita for a quirky dark visual novel that I expected to be somewhat similar to Zero Escape, but comparing the two is more than a bit difficult after going through the basic premise. The Walking Dead Season Two Review

the-walking-dead-game-season-2-walkthroughOkay, Telltale’s The Walking Dead. Opinion on the first season? Delightful little gem that I think should be played if you happen to own one of the dozen devices it was released for. However, following up on something that was lightning in a bottle and very much stood on its two legs several playthroughs in, and doing that while also making another title is a feat I would dub insane regardless of the pedigree. So it is a bit sad that I have to say that I did not find season two to come notably as close as season one did in just about any of the factors that would place it highly on my favorite games list. Yet I am one to provide reason for claims, and here is my review claiming why by dissecting season two to the best of my ability after one playthrough. I originally intended two, but then Danganronpa went on sale and I wanted to play it in order for a semi-timely review… over a week after the sequel comes out. (more…)

Cinders Review

2014-08-19_00012If I may ask an honest question, why are visual novel games not dirt cheap? They are a niche genre that, in the grand scheme of things, are the easiest type of game to make from the perspective of programming and the sort. I mean, I think $15 for a game from people with no references is a bit hard to swallow, but when it is $20, made as an interactive story above all else, and can easily be cleared in 3 hours with multiple endings not adding much to replay value, I am honestly baffled. Why am I bringing this up? Because I got this in a Humble Bundle and thought it was originally $10. (more…)

So yes, some schmuck on his own private playhouse is going to bad talk a critically acclaimed JPRG that many considered to be a reinvigoration of the genre. Rogue Legacy Review

2014-08-10_00001During the Steam summer sales, five eons ago at this point, I decided to pick up the oft masturbated towards Rogue Legacy and Risk of Rain. Two games of the roguelike genre, which I believed were games without purpose or any real progression, and instead prioritized repetition to obtaining a reward 90% of players can never hope to obtain, as the game is absurdly difficult. never againYou may have noticed that I have made four posts prior to this one about the Nigmabox Adventures With Skyrim, and if you chose to read them you would have seen that I grew increasingly more negative with my gripes out the game, with my irritations rising above all else. Well, they naturally had to lead to something, and they were, but there is one change I am going to make in contrast with my original plan to beat the game a second time, and not do that. Oh, trust me, I played the game, I played another 125 hours of it, on top of the 187 hours I originally invested in the title back in 2011. Heck, it’s partially because of that game that I am here doing this review, as that was the first game I chose to review, and I did so positively. The Stanley Parable Review

2014-06-21_00001The Stanley Parable is a game I heard nothing but great things about, while still having not much of an idea what the game was beyond a fully story based game with multiple narrative branches based on the player’s actions in an eccentric office building devoid of human interaction beyond an omnipotent voice. A description I find to be apt for the game beyond delving too much into what exactly entails with this interactive experience. Yet that is part of the problem, as this interactive experience is designed around the player being given very little of an idea as to what entails in their journey, a journey that, chances are, will be different than others if only due to the manner in which it is experienced. But I feel I can stretch this out beyond and introduction, so I shall. (more…)
