Gokudo Review

Oh boy, this is sure a nostalgia trip. Way back in 2008, I was barely even alive based on my recollection, and I ended up watching an odd little late 1990’s fantasy anime about a massive prick of an adventurer. I watched the subtitled version, because I felt like it. When I was bored back in late June and wanted a new manga to read, I looked this forgotten series up and decided to give its dub a whirl. But is this a treasure worth remembering, or just a piece of crap that deserved to be forgotten by everyone? Hit the jump and leap elbow first!

Fairly Messy Rant: Sex, Nudity, And Battle Kittens

Well, time for another Fairly Messy Rant.  The needed father of a generation, and messiah figure of several novels, that have yet to be written, Jonathan Holmes, is one of my favorite human beings.  It is hard to place why, it is like explaining the appeal of chocolate to someone without taste buds, but I find his general oddness and likability to be very hard to find traits, and his lack of traditional human extremes simply makes him a fascinating individual.  However, I am not here to talk about him, but rather Battle Kittens, and why it makes me very uncomfortable.

Penny Arcade’s Principle of Darkness: On The Rain-Slick Episode 3 Review

Note: I re-reviewed this game in 2013. Please disregard this original review.

Well… That was shorter than expected.  I was originally going to delay this review, since the game’s website indicated that there would be 22 chapters, but I think it was just the original plotline.  But onto the backstory!  Way back in 2008, two games in the horribly long winded Penny Arcade’s Principle of Darkness: On The Rain-Slick series were released, and then the company who was making them decided that they wanted to make hack and slash titles with a comedic undertone.  But moving back to the title, why do you need two titles in a spin-off of a webcomic?  But a title doesn’t make a game, and for me, the actual gameplay didn’t make the first title worth a purchase.  Now, this was back in 2010, but opening with a 1920’s setting and humping fruit machines taking over a suburb, is just kinda dumb.  But that was nearly 4 years ago, and the third instalment has finally arrived, thanks to Zeboyd Games.  But does this title live up to the other Zeboyd games?  Hit the jump and find out!

Cthulhu Saves The World Review

A mere 8 months after their first title, Zeboyd brought forth one of the most improved sequels over the amount of time, that I can recall, Cthulhu Saves The World!  Armed with an improved engine, which is still not that unlike an advanced RPG maker, a full soundtrack by an indie game composer, Gordon McNeil, and a development time 3 times larger than the first game’s, this behemoth launched near the end of 2010, and is probably one of the best RPGs of that year.  Enough fluff, let’s dive into a game about the Elder God who grants insanity upon anyone who glances at him.

Pokemon Conquest Review

When I first heard about Pokemon Conquest, then called Pokemon+Nobunaga’s Ambition, I had two thoughts, “What is this Japanese exclusive strategy series doing with my precious Pocket Monsters?”  And, “Well, this isn’t coming to the states, that’s for sure.  If Nintendo’s previous experiments with Xenoblade and The Last Story taught them anything, it’s that you need to start a petition to outsell every other region the game launched in.”  But, much to my surprise, Nintendo actually released it, probably because they didn’t want to get another Mother 3.  So in the early summer I devoted over 70 hours into this little game, and finally beat the first of over 7 stories.  But was that a well spent 70 hours?  Read and find out!

The World God Only Knows Season One Review

Let me begin by saying that I have never tried to review an anime before, and this might not be very well structured, seeing as how I never actually read a full anime review before in my life. That is very unprofessional, but I’m just trying to have a good time, and I want to talk about the dub to one of my favorite animes of all time, The World God Only Knows!

Borderlands: Game of the Year Edition Review

Due to my obsession with themes, I decided that I would play two very different Unreal powered First Person Shooters, which were published by 2K, and have upcoming sequels that are releasing nearly 3 years after the previous instalment in the series.  So here is Borderlands, a cult hit FPS with RPG mechanics in the form of status, levels, and quests.  After selling the majority of its 6 million sold units, I rented it during a trial that I had with Gamefly.  My impressions of it then were overshadowed by the glitch where the Level Up logo was stuck on my screen between the fourth and fifth level.  I certainly have a lot to talk about with Borderlands and its DLC, 7 pages in fact, so let’s get onto it!

Bioshock Review

Way back when I was really starting to get into games, and actually start growing up past the 7 year old that I was on the inside, I heard some ravings about a game known as Bioshock.  For the longest time, I never saw any footage of it, all I heard were people stating spoilers regarding Andrew Ryan, Frank Fontaine, and Atlas, a plot twist, and how it is “deep”.  This was before I was willing to play first person shooters, mostly because they scared me for some stupid reason.  But since then, I have gained an appreciation for shooters thanks to Half Life 2, Mass Effect, and Metroid Prime.  But as for Bioshock, let’s see if it stands up 5 years after the initial release.

Bioshock Box Art Rift

While I was examining my games’ shelf, I glanced at the back of the box of Bioshock, and I felt like giving it a little riff.  Now, I am currently playing through the game for the first time, and I am enjoying it, so think of this as a prelude to the actual review, which may take a while due to the stockpile of reviews that I have. After glancing my eyes from the Bouncer Big Daddy, which were not very common during my first 12 hours with the game, I flipped over the case and gazed upon solid gold. …

Gargoyle’s Quest Review

Now, I don’t normally do retro reviews, because there is little to say about games that are literally less than an eighth of a thousandth as large as a mainstream console title.  But I want to talk about every game I play or beat, unless it is a demo or something, but I have nothing to say about most 3DS demos.  I mean, what am I supposed to say about LEGO Batman 2 or Crush 3D after about 20 minutes with them?  Guh, must learn to focus!

Mighty Milky Way Review

As one of the first titles I bought for my 3DS, I was excited to first play Mighty Milky Way, as it would finally be the first WayForward game that I’d get to actually own.  But after spending many an hour on the final level, I was unable to beat it, but I’m just going to review it anyway, because I said I would.  So let’s trim the fat and leap into WayForward week!

The Day of Revolution Review

It does feel really odd to have two pieces go up on the Fourth of July, but I need cheap themes to keep me going.  Now, I don’t even remember when I first heard about this manga.  All I do know was that it was mentioned when I got bored and decided to watch a review of an anime called Princess Princess, which I read, well mostly, but I do not plan on reviewing it.  Oh, and in case you are wondering, it is about an all boys academy where the three most girly looking men must dress up in gothic lolita garb and boost the school’s moral.  Yeah, I know it sounds awesome, but here is a manga that came out beforehand, and involves some of the same characters, The Day of Revolution.

Shantae: Risky’s Revenge Review

Note: I re-reviewed this game in 2015. Please disregard this original review.

Wayforward Technologies is a company who is known for making very solidly designed 2D games that look fantastic, even if they are licensed and carry the usual problems that a lack of polish brings.  One of their earlier titles was Shantae, a wonderfully animated and very enjoyable 2D platformer/action game for the Gameboy Color game, everything seemed in place for it to succeed, except for one fact, that it came out in Summer of 2002, one year after the release of the Gameboy Advance.  After a warm critical reception and low sales, the proposed Gameboy Advance sequel for the game struggled to find a Publisher to pick it up.

Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom Review

Back during the busy Holiday season of 2010, a little known game was released by a little known developer, and was published by a company who was launching it next to two other games.  All 3 of those games, Splatterhouse, Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, and Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom, all three of these games did less than stellar, but I am only here to talk about the last of the trio.  From the now defunct Game Republic, the game had a wide range of reactions, from X-Play’s 2/5, to Destructoid’s Jim Sterling, who gave it a 9.5/10.  Me, being a follower of Jim Sterling, took note of this game, but I only got around to playing it recently, after I got it on sale for about $6.  But what does my analysis end up stating about the game?  Read and find out!
